Forget the French fries. How about a side of yuca with that Big Mac?
Venezuela's more than 100 McDonald's franchises have run out of potatoes and are now serving alternatives like deep-fried arepa flatbreads or yuca, a starchy staple of traditional Venezuelan cooking.
McDonald's franchisers are blaming a contract dispute with West Coast dock workers for halting the export of frozen fries to the country. The dispute also caused several days of French fry rationing in Japan last month. But Sonia Ruseler, who runs McDonald's restaurants in Latin America, declined to say Tuesday why other countries in the region are not affected.
While McDonald's may be the ultimate symbol of U.S. capitalism, the socialist government seems acutely aware that Venezuelans relish their Happy Meals. On Monday, a state-sponsored news website posted a story assuring the situation "has nothing at all to do" with government policy.
At the Caracas McDonald's, a man wearing an "employee of the month" cap braved the dinner rush Monday, patiently explaining to patron after patron that instead of French fries, the store was offering yucca fries, mini-arepas, or salads.

Well, I HAD heard that there was no freak in french fries!
French fries, like so many fried foods, have a laxative effect.
And there's no toilet paper to be had in the entire country.
Venezuela is not just enjoying a socialist economy, with a few hours of power and water a day and ibuprofen being a luxury, but they are probably the most incompetent socialists at that. Even by dysfunctional commie standards, Venezuela is messed up.
A few in that crowd look like they should skip the fries, for awhile.
Call their local 911 and make it an emergency.

Potatoes were first cultivated probably in Peru (in very small mountainside fields), but the varieties normally made into french fries would find the climate and open terrain more suitable in parts of Argentina and Chile. Also, large-scale french fry manufacturing plants (like we have here in eastern WA) are very expensive.
