Senate fails to override Keystone XL veto [Five Votes Short]
Washington Examiner ^ | 03/04/2015 | BY JOHN SICILIANO

Posted on 03/04/2015 2:07:06 PM PST by SeekAndFind

The U.S. Senate voted down a key vote to override a White House veto on a bill to approve the contentious Keystone XL pipeline, which the GOP sees a key to job creation and maintaining a strong U.S. infrastructure.

The vote on override a presidential veto failed 62-37.

The Senate had passed the bill 62-36 in January. But last month President Obama vetoed the measure.

Republicans have said that if they couldn't override Obama's veto, they plan to wrap legislation green-lighting the 1,700-mile pipeline into a spending measure or broader bill, such as the federal highway bill.

But Democrats who oppose the $8 billion Canada-to-Texas project say they're confident Obama would continue to nix legislative attempts to approve the pipeline.

The administration has maintained it would reject bills that circumvent a federal review for a cross-border permit TransCanada Corp. needs to build the pipeline's northern leg. That State Department review has been ongoing for more than six years.

Obama predicted Monday that the State Department would finish its review in "weeks or months."

Pipeline supporters say Obama has had plenty of time to assess the project and have criticized him for holding up the 42,100 jobs the State Department said the pipeline would provide during its two-year construction phase.

"While we urge Congress to continue to fight for [Keystone XL], there should be no need for congressional action if the president would make a final judgment on Keystone. The president has always had the authority on this and he can approve this pipeline today," said American Petroleum Institute President Jack Gerard.

"After more than six years, it's time to move beyond excuses and delays. If we are ever going to enhance our nation's infrastructure we must start by making good decisions on projects that are in our national interest."

Then they shouldn’t complain in a few years when the price goes back up. East Asia will take it then.

You union suckers who voted Democrat now ought to understand that union jobs take a back seat to environmentalist extremism.

Lemme get this straight - they are saying they will use the same tactics to pass Keystone that they used to block DHS funding/amnesty? And then cave and give obola exactly what he wants? Holy shmokes! Anyone who insists on continuing to vote GOP is clearly, painfully just as anti-American as the left is. This is beyond ridiculous.

Do like the Beatles. Send him a new bill “eight days a week” until he signs it.

I think this will be the pattern the next two years.

Any reasonable bill the Republicans put to Obama’s desk, whether it is repealing Obamacare, or Tax Reform or anything else will be vetoed.

Any attempt to override the veto will die the same death as Keystone XL.

I can’t blame Republicans for Keystone XL. They’ve done what they could do under the constraints the Constitution places on them.

What else can be done?

They can continue putting this bill to the White House and Obama can veto it till his pen runs out of ink but the results will be the same.

“Republicans have said that if they couldn’t override Obama’s veto, they plan to wrap legislation green-lighting the 1,700-mile pipeline into a spending measure or broader bill, such as the federal highway bill.”

Sure they will. If they attach Keystone to a highway bill (or any funding bill), Barry will say he will veto it and then either Dingy Harry will block it, or Barry will in fact veto it. In either case, McConnell and Boehner will fold since they do not want to be responsible for “shutting down” the highway fund.

I’m sure Barry wishes McConnell/Boehner would occasionally fight, just to make it interesting. It’s just too easy for him now.

All it takes is one call from the head of the DNC, “Unless you vote with Obama, we will pull all the funding for your re-election”.

BOOM ..!!!! DONE ..!!!!

Disguise the bill in an abreviated form that looks like a golf scorecard. He’s bound to sign it.

What else can be done?

First off, they can arrest the POS imposter in the White House. Until that happens, they are spineless, worthless worms.

So, the choices are:

* Send a bill Obama will sign

* Force a government shutdown.

I can’t think of any other option under the circumstances.

Once the pipeline is completed...not many jobs will be.

The railroads are getting hammered now about railroad tanker cars...not being safe enough.

Personally...I think pipelines are safer.

The house and senate, especially the Republican side ought to just go home, kick back with a shot and a beer and watch a little TV. They are hopelessly out classed in the governing department. Any time they spend trying to justify themselves is adding to the now overwhelming evidence that they are a disaster of the highest order. It looks like a Kindergarten game of “Mother May I?”
