China says Taiwan welcome to join AIIB with appropriate name

Most countries, including the United States, do not recognise Taiwan due to pressure from China. Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations, the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund. However it is a member of the Asian Development Bank under the name of Taipei, China. China views Taiwan as a renegade province and has not ruled out the use of force to bring it under its control. However, since Taiwan's current president Ma Ying-jeou took office in 2008, enmity has declined considerably and the two sides have signed a number of trade and investment deals. The AIIB issue has touched off a heated debate in Taiwan since the Presidential Office announced the island's intent to join on Monday.

I have had a hard time supporting Taiwan, because every time I do, it makes noise like it might want to rejoin China.

I’m willing to defend it, if it is willing to take a stand itself.

I’m not asking that they get belligerent, but they could at least stand to their own principles, separate and proud.

ChiComs have been threatening to invade Taiwan since 1949.

And ever since, the same question has been asked: can the dragon swim?

Taiwan does not want to become part of communist China, they see what happened to Hong Kong (Beijing promised them some autonomy for 50 years and now pretty much appoints their government)

Taiwan technically considers itself the rightful ruler of all China. The big issue in Taiwan lately is whether to drop that claim and just be an independent country. (Then there would be no “Two China’s” crap)

I don’t follow Tiawan that closely, so you may be right. I hope they did go to school on Hong Kong. Then again, they should have known even before that how that would turn out.

I can understand Taiwan thinking it rightfully should be the leader of all China. I do think prudence is called for, and I agree with your take on the two nation concept and dynamics.

China isn’t going to give up forever IMO. Taiwan is living on borrowed time. I just want to make sure they actually understand that.

” . I hope they did go to school on Hong Kong. Then again, they should have known even before that how that would turn out.”

I’ve been there, and they have always gotten it. Taiwan is most fearful because of Obama. He emboldens our enemies, and China is indeed our enemy.

I have no doubt the rank and file get it, perhaps just most of them, but their leaders have made overtures at times.

I would never make a public statement leaving the impression I might favor a return of Tiawan to today’s China. I have seen a few of their leaders do just this.

I appreciate your comments. Perhaps you are aware of how this angered the rank and file too. That would be very good to know.

” but their leaders have made overtures at times.”

The leaders are BS’ing China, trying to buy time until Obama leaves office. It probably won’t work. China will take them before Obama leaves office. That is the general consensus there.

Actually, this dates back to just prior to 2000, at least I believe it was that time frame.

It was that long ago.

If China is going to take the Spratley Island chain by force or occupation, it’s not going to let Tiawan skate forever.

I think China is biding it’s time until it feels it’s close in Navy can stand up to the U. S. that will come to Taiwan’s aide (at least in theory).

China's Navy has no chance against the U.S. Navy assets in the area. The question, of course, is whether Obama would defend Taiwan against an attack.

I agree with the later part of your comment. Of course Obama support of Taiwan would be a real uncertainty.

As for China’s Navy, in the conventional sense I would agree. Now, what about a super cruise anti ship missile, and deployed to the extent we wouldn’t want to risk our carriers to defend Taiwan?

I’ll admit I don’t know all the particulars, but risking a full blown war with China is a concern. Could we defend Taiwan short of that?

We certainly know the idiot we have in there now couldn’t do it.
