I hope you are right as an alien army would be one more nail in the coffin.

California’s patriotism is untarnished as everyone loves their nation of birth-MEXICO!

Every state can find patriotic areas. As a whole I am sure Chris Matthews and Martin O’Malley are FAR more representative of the state than the relatively few folks in the hills. As an aside, from what I’ve heard about Annapolis, I’m not sure it is such a welcoming place for conservatives. They’re increasingly “Mike Mullen” navy types...and the rainbow flag flies high.

A bridge near my home now bears a plaque for a local (I believe the parents came from Peru); in my area it seems many Latinos gravitate towards the service (though I don’t know if they are from other countries or are born Americans). Can’t say the same for Brazilians or Haitians, though; I don’t think the military offers much to them back in their home countries, so they don’t even consider it here.

I think our government has to be wary of having the military wind up as a social engineering laboratory like the postal service, employing unemployables for the sake of wealth transfers...

I agree with you, hence my enthusiasm for conscription. The Romney kids will serve, as will the Sununu’s and Burr’s.

I understand the sentiment, but once you have conscription your foreign forays are examined much more closely. That is why European troops were so seldom used for decades; their attempts to hold onto their colonies with conscripted troops left a bad taste in the mouths of their citizens, and they now demand a lot more accountability for them.

If we had a draft, the invasion of Iraq would never have happened (and it probably shouldn’t have).

Virginia, Maryland area was one of the most expensive places I have ever lived. When I arrived, began my position at the company...soon after I received an envelope from the government. Opened it up and it was a personal property tax form. The form asked to list personal items of value in my home such as pictures, furniture and so forth.

The next day, I went to work and asked some coworkers that were native Virginians...they said, toss it. No one returns these things. If you do, the government will begin taxing personal property. YIKES!

Then, registered my auto that I purchased in Texas. Paid sales tax in Texas and registration so forth. The state assessed a personal property tax on my vehicle...every year! YIKES! again. Not once, but every year. The state did choose to throw out a bone..you could divide the payments in two. Pay half in Jan./half in June. If I remember correctly...it was close to $600 a year for a 96 Merc. cougar.

Co-workers telling me stories of personal property taxes on cars, ATV’s, RV’s, Boats.

Then you had to have a reg. tag, inspection tag which is not much different than Texas...cept, you also had to have a county tag. Gimmini Chriss-miss.

I'd looked into purchasing a modest lil home, rather than renting. Good grief. This was back in the mid 90’s. A small 1100 sq ft. “ranch home” (basically a lil box) was running $150K back then. YIKES once again.

Loved the area, very beautiful, very historical, but I had to get my seff back down to Texas.

What does it mean today to be patriotic? To what and whom exactly?

When I got a tax statement the other day it included a reminder that I’m supposed to get a building permit to replace a water heater, furnace, or install new windows.

When I replace a water heater or furnace no one will need to know about it and I’m not going to add $100 or more to the cost of every window I put in.

Good for you. That may seem small, but you ARE doing your part to display civil disobedience. Again...good for you.

I disagree. If we had a draft we’d have several more divisions at least and a reserve force brimming with soldiers to occupy the two third world cesspools. The 82d and 1st Marines along with the rest of the active force would have been spared the multiple deployments. Oh...and the Romney boys would have participated.

As we learned in Vietnam, it smply isn’t possible to occupy Third World cesspools over the long run. The Romneys still could have gotten deferments anyway.

My point was that if we had a draft, Americans definitely would have scrutinized the justifications for the invasion of Iraq more closely. Most Americans didn’t analyze it too closely because they weren’t being forced to send their sons over there.

After so many of the political and military leaders from the Vietnam War admitted that many mistakes were made, I don’t expect we’ll see a draft again in our lifetimes.

Well we occupied Korea which was as bad as anything anywhere on earth. As for the Romney boys all getting deferments...perhaps...but likely not all of them. In my opinion the correct answer to all the boys seeking to go on missions was that they could go on missions as soon as they were done with their two years in the infantry (or whatever).

Korea is a peninsula; there was no Ho Chi Minh trail. Also, unlike South Vietnam, Koreans didn’t want communism; as Americans retreated after the Red Chinese entered the war, North Korean civilians followed them south to escape North Korea.
