Education researchers, college administrators and professors at the American Enterprise Institute expressed concern that more poor kids aren’t going to college. For example, the University of Chicago’s Jenny Nagaoka, a deputy director with their Chicago Consortium of School Research complained that researchers are “mostly focused” on high achievers but not low- or middle-achievers.
Jessica Howell, an executive director of policy research at the College Board, agreed and said that college matching is “about more than just the academics.” She suggested that there are significant gaps in college matching, where “more affordable, closer to home, more culturally familiar” options have varying weights with low-income students looking at their college options.
Nicole Farmer Hurd, founder of the adviser-placement organization called College Advising Corps, aims to improve financial literacy. Too often in her experience, “nobody knows the difference” between grants and loans.
University of Michigan assistant professor of education Awilda Rodriguez is more concerned that “over half of college students had a high school GPA between a 2.0 and a 3.5.” In her research, she said, “First, most students believe that they would get a bachelor degree. And, of those students, only about 40% were enrolled in colleges that had above a 50% graduation rate.”
Jon Boeckenstedt, DePaul University associate vice president for enrollment, noted that college attendance rates have fallen recently and it has exacerbated the problems facing higher education. He added that economic problems are plaguing students and their families and said, “If you’re in the bottom quintile of income, your family income has fallen 14%” at least since the recession.
Lindsey Page, an assistant professor of research methodology at the University of Pittsburgh’s Learning Research and Development Center, asked why attention is being focused on high achievers and not the “other 96% of students” who are under achievers or middle-of-the-road students.
OK, when I read the headline I thought “finding suitable colleges for dummies.”
Well, we do in fact have many poor colleges.
What will happen is they will get those low-med performers into college then businesses will raise the minimum requirements for entry to a Masters degree, then Phd.
The problem — most parents and students do not look at the cost of education frugally. So what if it costs $12000 a year for a kid to live on campus, so what if tuition is many times that. We'll just borrow the money, they say.
And of course, if you can't afford it, the “government will help you.”
A lot of these kids should be going to a trade school. There are many good middle class jobs out there.
Academics sure are stupid. Or is that greedy? Get government and tax dollars out of schools and watch the cost of education decrease, thus making it more accessible to everyone.
Another slam dunk issue for the Dems.

“Free” college for everybody!
But there’s no “prestige” in going to a trade school and learning some blue collar skill. The “prestige” is in going to a four year college.
Many don’t realize that it wasn’t until after World War II that huge numbers of middle class people started going to college. In historic terms, it’s a recent phenomenon that we have a situation in which almost all middle class people expect their children to go to college. Yet based on the structure of the economy, relatively few jobs in our economy really require a college education. And many of those that do require specific degrees or specific skills, not just possession of a generic bachelor’s degree in some random liberal arts field.
If you are not afraid of work, the time and money wasted going to college to be programmed by the Marxists is unnecessary.

What in America would not improve if half the people going to college did something useful instead?
The best thing for America would be to reduce the number of people enrolled in “higher” “education” by half.
In the “old days” when I was middle aged, the MSM actually talked about things like the “deficit” and “govt borrowing”.
The reality is the Chicago Mob was able to offset Obama’s horrible economy via gravy handouts of borrowed money and win re-election in 2012.

Part of the issue, IMO, is that there is a lack of ownership and ethics. For example, how many people expect the federal government to pay off their student loans?
Ethically, it is completely unfair for the middle class taxpayer, who may not have a college education and are just barely making ends meet to pick up the tab for some “entitled” rich kid who made a stupid decision and has $200K of debt and a useless degree.
And the Dems will claim that they will make the rich pay but any smart thinking person knows that it won’t happen and that the middle class taxpayer will get stuck paying the bill.
Unfortunately, we will all suffer when the debt is uncontrollable and especially the poor who have spent their whole lives with their palms up looking for handouts.
Yes. I would bet for more than 50% of college grads have virtually worthless degrees as far as gainful employment. Time to put the brakes on Big Ed(ucation) i.e the outsize influence of colleges and universities.
