I am 55 years old. As such, I have lived through exactly three booms. That is, the sixties, the eighties, and a half each with the nineties and the oughts. Prosperity has a feeling, regardless of what the official government numbers are. Jobs boom, construction cranes abide, skirts are shorter, people have opportunities. None of this has been true over the last seven years. They say that unemployment is 5.1%, yet wages are flat, if not lower. This so-called ‘recovery’ has felt more like a recession than an expansion. You can tell me that unemployment is 1.8% and I would think you a fool. But the obsiquists in the MSM will trumpet the great economic news as if they were bringing scripture down form Mount Sinai. If I can’t see their knees, it ain’t a recovery.

This reminds me of the joke about how, in some countries, the people replace the government when unhappy with it, while in others the government replaces the people. Except that, it’s not a joke. Dzhugashvili just wasn’t as suave about it.

because you’re old enough i can tell you why we feel this way. In the early nineties they came up with the discouraged worker gimmick. It was done for one reason only and that was so politicians don’t have to answer for high unemployment rates. They don’t want the blame ergo they changed the system.
I’m 61 and believe me your feelings are shared all over the nation.

And I’m in my 70’s. There is no recovery. Yes, gas prices are much lower but increases in groceries, utilities, insurance and taxes are beyond belief. Lower gas prices have resulted in more guys out of work, some of them my neighbors with small children. We have cut out everything that isn’t absolutely necessary and it isn’t enough. Too bad the government doesn’t do the same.

The B.S. meter is running at full steam.

This so-called ‘recovery’ has felt more like a recession than an expansion.

That is because it has been the weakest recovery since WW2. GDP growth is just a bit over 2% a year. From what I've read, it could be even lower depending on what is used for a GDP deflator. Using CPI-U would lower it even more.

I have done the math. The ‘growth’ in the economy is less than the federal deficit. In other words, the borrowed money pumped into the economy resulted in less net economic growth. We have sold our souls to future generations to eek out a miniscule economic growth.

I concur. The GDP trendline has been downward for the last 25 years or. I don’t see that reversing anytime soon. I suspect we will see 10 year auto loans after the next recession...
