The student who stabbed four people on the campus of UC Merced was identified Thursday as 18-year-old Faisal Mohammad from Santa Clara, Calif., the university confirms to Fox News.
"He had a smile on his face, he was having fun," a construction worker who helped stop the attack told CBS 47.
Campus police shot and killed Mohammad, a freshman computer science & engineering major, after Wednesday's attack. Police detonated his backpack and are testing a substance inside, KGO reports.
The four victims are expected to survive.
Authorities are investigating a motive.

The incident began shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday in a classroom in the Classroom and Office Building. Investigators say it started with a fight, which escalated into a confrontation in which Mohammad pulled a knife and then took his attack outside. The suspect fled the scene and was pursued by campus police before being fatally shot.
Three are four victims involved, including two students, one staff member and one construction worker.
As of Thursday morning, one student remains hospitalized but is expected to recover, and the other student was treated and released. The staff member suffered a collapsed lung and was recovering Thursday after successful surgery. The construction worker was treated and released Wednesday.
Authorities are investigating a motive. Warnke said the knife blade was eight to 10 inches long (obviously an assault knife).

prior to the first news on these attacks I had never been aware of any kinfe attacks in the US...where the perpetrator stabbed any victims In The Neck.

Fully agree. One could tweak restrictions to meet even SCOTUS test, if one qualifies to restrict “radical Islam” as not a protected religion bc of its strictly political goals of taking down all governments, including our democracy and other democracies. Separate the violent behavior from that of “peaceful” Islam; restrict the former. Yes, that is somewhat of an artificial construct.
