Julia Anderson, happy Indiana girl, hit the road. It ended with her dead in a NewOrleans parkinglot

The call Jeannene Anderson always dreaded came on a day in March.

A New Orleans homicide detective across the line barely finished the words "death investigation," when Anderson fell to the floor thinking of her daughter's peregrine life.

Julia, who for years had lived as a transient, would not be coming home. New Orleans police found her in a McDonald's parking lot the evening of March 19, clutching her neck from a stab wound authorities say was inflicted by another transient, 38-year-old Christopher Hutsell. She was rushed to surgery but died several hours later.

"People in this situation, where you've got somebody in this lifestyle for so many years, you think you're prepared for this call," Anderson said of her daughter's vagabond lifestyle a few weeks after her death. "It goes through your mind thousands of times. But the actual feeling is so different, to know that your child is dead."

Perhaps it was the romantic allure of "freedom" that led a teenage Julia Anderson to pursue life as a modern-day nomad. But after five or so years of hopping freight trains and squatting in abandoned homes across the United States, the 23-year-old known by her road name, "Zoe," arrived in New Orleans in February 2015 with her eyes set, again, on a more settled life.

She never got the chance. Hutsell, who last week was ruled competent to stand trial, is set to face a jury Tuesday (Nov. 10) in Orleans Parish Criminal Court. He has pleaded not guilty to killing Julia.

"You thought she was getting her life together," Anderson said. "It might have been a long road before she got her life together, but she never had that opportunity. Her life was taken ... I won't ever be the same."

On Chicago's southern border sits the town of Blue

A long but good read.

Basically she sounds like a spoiled little girl who's parents enabled her for far too long. The streets are full of these upper class and upper middle class kids who choose to be vagrants for whatever reason. I don't understand it.

The comments a good at the articles end. Not a whole lot of sympathy for the deceased girl.

I am not surprised. She sounds like yet person who did not want to put on the mantle of adulthood.

I do...and for the family. I have loads of sympathy for this family.

This particular generation is lost/searching. Despite wonderful family, etc. many people in this generation are so lost.

Begging is profitable and you pay no taxes and do no paperwork. Kids down here do it as a no-hassle, no bosses, no bureaucracy way of getting money.

For homicide detectives, the clock starts ticking the moment they are called.

Ask not for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. May she RIP.

Julia graduated from Indiana’s Chesterton High School in 2008, just as the country plunged into what would become the Great Recession.

That’s enough for me!

Yep.

They look at how hard their parents work, the hassles of trying to be legal in all you do, the way the walls keep closing in with more and more rules, and many just don't want that. They don't know what else to do and make bad decisions because they don't. Not bums with druggie parents, but good and well-raised middle class kids.

You can teach them as much as they will absorb, but in the end they make their own decisions.

Amendment to your fine comments.

“The cemeteries are full of these upper class and middle class kids who choose to be vagrants for whatever reason”.

From the story: “Julia ran through the house and took her mother’s wallet before fleeing with her friends. In her desperation, Anderson called police and reported the theft.”

Doesn’t sound like enabling. Maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to judge.

I suspect some combination of mental illness and drugs played a part in this story.

yup. thank you. I've spoken to many a parent with similar heartache. In fact...there was a thread which spoke to me the other day on this very topic.

In any case....prayers for this no doubt distraught family. "there....but for the grace of God, go I". AND...it ain't over til it's over. thank you for any prayers.

I seem to remember the same thing being said in the late 50's and 60's.

And it was said in the 20's and 30's.

There are just people who don't want to work in every generation and they drop out.

They all seem to have a major allergy to soap as well.

Sorry-—”wonderful” family/ not. But I do have sympathy for the girl and family, but they are NOT “wonderful parents” if they raise such children.

Wonderful parents instill virtue in their children which takes lots of time and human interactions with the child. It is their Natural Duty from God. Wonderful parents don’t allow culture and strangers and Hollywood sodomites to “educate” and “train” their children to be without any virtues and to remain dumb.

I know-—the system set up by the socialists, only create dependent, immoral ignorant adults who remain addicted and puerile for life-—that is what socialism does and is meant to do. As Solzhenitsyn stated-—even a little bit of Socialism rots the Soul.....but Christian parents should always know better and never shirk their duty.

Parents need to return to their Natural Duties which they are commanded to do from God. Primary Duty is to raise and educate and nurture your own offspring. Children need a mother and father who instill wisdom and model virtue for both sexes and healthy human interaction between people.

It is funny how human beings are the only mammals who allow strangers to watch and “educate” their young. Most, if not all, mammals kill strangers who get close to their babies. But we have convinced generations that women need to “work” outside of the family structure-—that bearing and nurturing babies and children is NOT “work” and NOT important when it is the most important *job* in all of history.

Institutions dehumanize the children and make them incapable of true love and trust and flourishing—damaging all future relationships. And we WONDER——WHY? all these kids are “lost” because of their abandonment and ignored childhoods and lack of loving role models and individual human interactions-—in front of screens and in artificial, uncaring institutions with people who wouldn’t even be there if it wasn’t for money. Creepy culture-—and kids KNOW it and are empty-—because they are godless with no ability to understand selfless love (Christianity)-—because they never ever experienced it.
