County Jail Run for Profit: Inmates = Slaves
Civil Rights Attorney ^ | November 19, 2015 | Jaye Ryan, Attorney at Law

Posted on 11/19/2015 4:46:45 PM PST by Talkwire

Jails are NOT profit centers, and people in custody are not slaves. Privatization of jail system phones and commissary has resulted in overcharging inmates, and a lucrative revenue source for the Contra Costa County Jail.

Remember our justice system is based around the presumption of innocence, "Innocent until proven Guilty". In fact, in 78% of Contra Costa County jail detainees are awaiting trial. These are people who could not make bail and are in the jail awaiting their day in court. Pre-sentence inmates are milked like revenue cows to make money for the County.

The Contra Costa Jail makes $1.5Million a year from overcharging detainees for phone and commissary services.

Don't do the crime if you can't pay the fine.

And if have to pay the fine, don't whine.

After the events in Paris on 11/13, I will be adding
this to my posts for the next week. I'm certain our
turn is coming again soon. We stand united against
Islamic extremists.

An honorable mention also goes out to Lassana Bathily , a Muslim immigrant from Mali.
Mr. Bathily sheltered customers at the Jewish Deli and helped police by providing info
on the terrorists, and providing the location of survivors in the deli.

people in custody are not slaves.

Looks like someone didn't bother to ever read the Constitution. Maybe the dude (or dudette - not sure what a Jaye is) ought to try going to a decent law school.

13th Amendment, Section 1: Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Inmates aren’t slave - that’s very true. And they are treated as such, and it’s wrong. That’s also very true. Private jails should be tightly controlled to keep them nonprofit.

I wouldn’t mind rebating charges to those found “not guilty.”

Easily solved: have the county reimburse those whose charges are dismissed or who are found not guilty, zeroing out their account.

Alternatively, they could let all inmates choose between meals little more fancy PB&J or scrambled egg sandwich (all on white bread) and ice water to drink for a buck fifty or two from a vending machine OR something pricier from the commissary if that first solution seems too expensive.

You seem to have mistaken FR for DU.

Why, for simply posting an article????? Isn't that what everyone does?

Considering that Talkwire has 13 years more seniority than you, I think he knows what he's doing........

Article mentions that 78% of detainees in that jail are “pre-sentence”, so they are not guilty of anything except not being to afford bail.

Not to pick nits, but wouldn’t that be pre-verdict or pre-trial? As someone could have had a trial, not yet be sentenced, and still be pre-sentence.

Of course anyone who is pre-trial would be pre-sentence too. Though calling them that almost makes it seem like their trials are foregone conclusions.

“Jails are NOT profit centers,”

Who says they aren’t? If anything alleviates the taxpayer’s and makes these scumbags work and be self-dependent, why not?
