Few imagined such a crime could happen -- a triple murder and suicide -- in a middle-class Marrero neighborhood so thick with law enforcement officers that residents call it Cop Land. It's the kind of place where everyone waves hello but no one gets in each other's business.
When family gathered outside the yellow crime-scene tape Sunday (Nov. 29) in the Oak Forest subdivision, they comforted the sobbing teenager who had returned from a hunting trip to find her mother and stepfather dead in their living room at 4805 Brandi St. What she hadn't seen, when she ran out to call 911, were her two half-brothers: In separate bedrooms, they, too, were dead.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said David Mata, 46, fatally stabbed his wife, Kelli Fabre Mata, 40, and their sons, Caden Mata, 4, and Liam Mata, 2, sometime before 11 a.m. It was not immediately certain how David Mata killed himself, but a Sheriff's Office spokesman, Col. John Fortunato, said a straight-blade knife was found under his body.
"I didn't think he would do something like that. He was such a good person," said a friend of Kelli Mata's 18-year-old daughter, who discovered the crime. "He was happy with her." The two friends are seniors at Fisher Middle-High School in Jean Lafitte; Kelli Mata had another daughter as well, the friend said.
Indeed, David Mata's Facebook page is filled with photos of him and his wife, arms around each other and smiling. Their towheaded sons pose proudly in superhero Halloween costumes.
Mata was from Spain, and the couple had been married since April 2012. His Facebook profile speaks of the power of keeping God in one's heart.

I have never understood why a person would take their family with them if that person decided to commit suicide. Suicide should be a solitaire thing.

If this scumbag wanted to kill himself, fine. But there is a special place in Hell for those selfish enough to think that when their life ends, their family’s life should end too.

As the libertarians tell us, drugs are a victimless crime. Sounds like a case of ‘roid rage. A lot of folks that sell them also use them.

For all you know they had an argument that stemmed from the fact that the drugs were illegal, in which case, it would be the prohibition and not the drugs that is responsible for the murders and suicide.
Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t kill anybody that I know of.

Anyhow the devil cannot be reasoned with. He can only be overpowered through the power of God.
I was thinking roid rage myself. We will find out.
If one puts forth a witness to God today, it is to ask for the worst that the devil can do. One should make the best effort to confirm that the witness is true. It does not need perfection (this is the goal of eternal heaven) but it does need progress in the right direction.
Even so, what he was wishing (perhaps) he could do with God, we should take warning and actually strive to see is true in our lives. I don’t know if he simply got caught in a weak moment and performed a tragic act inconsistent with where his soul wanted to be. Or if he was buffaloing us with a sentiment about as deep as a Hallmark card. At any rate, we should not conclude from this that God means nothing.
Non story. No guns involved, so let’s spice this tragedy up a notch.

On the other hand... how did they KNOW it was suicide and not an intruder. Just to ask academically if nothing else. Dead men tell no tales. Their death scene might, or might not. This looks like a most uncharacteristic level of malice.
When scanning through the story, what I noticed was the anabolic steroids, and my next thought was Chris Benoit.
I find it difficult to blame just the drugs. Unless they have been taken in ignorance and pushed the person to the point that cutting someone’s head off is viewed as slicing a lemon, they can only uncork an evil that was already welcomed.
He must have smoked enough weed to stay mellow.

there was recently a similar incident here in Florida. Father killed the wife and two high school aged kids. Psychiatrist stated he was an off the chain narcissist who decided to kill himself. She said he killed the rest of the family because he was convinced that “they could not possibly survive without him being here”. In other words he did them a favor.
