It is time to look more seriously at the Donald Trump presidential candidacy. He continues to lead the polls among Republicans; his closest rivals seem now to be Senators Mario Rubio and Ted Cruz, easing ahead of Dr. Ben Carson. There does not seem to have been much effort to see the Trump candidacy in any sort of historic context. For the first time in its history, the United States has had four, and arguably five, consecutive terms of unsuccessful federal government, from administrations and Congresses of both parties.
The last Clinton term under-reacted to the original terrorist incidents at the Khobar Towers (1996), the Nairobi and Dar es Salaam embassies (1998) and the USS Cole (in 2000); and stoked up the housing bubble through the Community Reinvestment Act and executive orders to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to invest massively in sub-prime mortgages. George W. Bush responded well to terrorism, and his economic countermeasures were adequate after the 9/11 attacks, but he did nothing to let the air gently out of the housing bubble, his response was contemptibly inept when the economic crisis erupted, and his intervention in Iraq was for unsubstantiated reasons and resulted in a major strategic victory for Americaâs Iranian enemies, a vast waste of lives and treasure, and an immense humanitarian crisis.
President Obama has doubled the national debt accumulated in 233 years of American independence in eight years, not really produced an economic recovery, facilitated nuclear weapons for Iran after a great deal of purposeful braggadocio, and humiliated the United States by drawing and erasing a âred lineâ in Syria and being chased out of its air space by the Russians.

Nixon was a good president, but he was undone by two bit liberals who have been gloating ever since. The by-product being presidents and congresses from both parties that are mediocre.
I'm in 100% for Trump. I pray that he stays healthy and see this thru to the end.
A refreshing contrast against our "Blame America First" POTUS.
Unlike some on this forum I’m trying to focus on policies rather than personalities, and although I don’t appreciate much of his style, I do support most of what Trump has said.
Still, its Cruz as my #1, Trump #2.

Speak for yourself, Johnny-Come-Lately.

I can see how an NRO article like this could make the GOPe go all a-twitter.
But Nixon was not a good president.
I must say, in a bragging way, I say the ascendancy and election of obama from a long way out. My father basically said I was nuts. There was just a feel.
Anyway, I initially thought of Trump as not a serious candidate, for lack of a better term. My wife actually said a few things but I didn't take it too seriously. I did like how he was shaking up the Establishment. I didn't think I could vote for him.
That may be changing. He's a Big Picture type of person, has the management types fill in everything. We shall see though. We shall see.
Nixon created the EPA and OSHA. He called for Universal Health Insurance. He created the dreaded Alternative Minimum Tax. Nixon imposed wage and price controls on the US economy. He implemented racial quotas as a federal hiring policy.
Nixon embraced Communist Beijing and dumped America's diplomatic recognition of Taiwan.
Nixon considered Reagan a "showy know nothing."
And that doesn't even get into the corruption issues.
If Nixon is your idea of a "good" conservative president, I don't consider that much of an endorsement of Trump.

” trying to focus on policies rather than personalities”
Policy is important. I exclude some candidates based on their weakness on immigration. Trump is my #1 because his policies are acceptable to me and because I think he has the most personal force and toughness.
See if you can find the video by Ivanka of how the board room works in the family business. Two things that stood out
Trump listens well (something sons have reiterated) and when it comes time to make final decision between final choices DT makes the decision. She explains that he doesn’t want any of them feeling bad or taking the responsibility of an unsuccessful results. A true leader understands that the buck stops with them He has always taken on that responsibility.
The problem people don’t understand is the battle is not republican vs democrat any more. It’s we the people vs elitists. Or we the people vs the uniparty. Did you read Laz’s post 85 here?
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/3372298/posts?page=85#85
It’s well worth clicking through and reading his post “Elitist vs. Populist”.
Really explains a lot and matches what is going on. I’ve been framing what’s happening with Trump as people sick of elitists for a while now but never put it all together like Laz did. The battlefield has changed, people need to stop acting like Don Quixote fighting imaginary enemies. That how you lose a war.
Yes, and he understands the battlefield, check out post 10.
I agree. That’s why these people are calling for Romney, and you have guys like Ryan whom I thought was with us, taking the side of the elites.
The elites are also in the media. I was totally fooled by the FOX pundits. They are the stupidest people. They do the Friday Casino with Bret Bair and the most they put on Trump is $5? The guy has been leading and his lead growing.
Will read Laz’s now.
I think Nixon’s administration was efficient, and he was a product of the times where the president is sneaky and secretive.
How you guys can listen to Trump and NOT see he’s a Lefty is beyond me.
You make good points.
Clearly, we needed a Carter and Ford to give us Reagan, and now we needed an Obama, the worst of all presidents, to give us Trump.
A lot of people want him gone.
For a lefty he’s pretty righty. :-)
Let's see: in 1968 we had a major war going full bore halfway around the world, we had an all-consuming and expensive space race to get us ahead of the Soviets, we had major civil rights unrest ongoing, inflation, the Middle East on fire (with the eventual Arab oil embargo) and a hugely dangerous Cold War which threatened to go hot any second.
Nixon took on all of those issues, eventually ending the Vietnam War, started detente to defuse and eventually end the Cold War, we made it to the moon, and we made progress on civil rights, inflation, and stabilizing the Middle East. He was a superb president - he was brought down by the Left and the presidency has been diminished ever since.
Amen.
LOL!
Correction:
"eventually losing the Vietnam War. "
