Three of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy's sons and what they claim are 150 militia members have occupied a federal building in eastern Oregon in order to keep two local ranchers out of prison, according to local reports.

The group is believed to be heavily-armed.

According to The Oregonian, the group seized the headquarters building at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge about 50 miles outside Burns, Ore. The remote facility was closed and unoccupied at the time.

Bundy and his supporters were in Oregon after two men were scheduled to go to prison on Monday for setting fires on federal land, according to a report by Oregon Public Broadcasting. The case has caused a stir in eastern Oregon because the two men were charged under anti-terrorism laws.

The Feds have long needed to turn lands over to the States.

“Usually the “For what” is to protect land from devastating fires that occur because you don’t do a controlled burn every so many years.”

I obviously didn’t understand the whole backstory. What I understood was that these people were committing arson and I was confused as to why any rational person would condone this. The extenuating circumstances were unclear to me. I understand the merits of these burning techniques, I just didn’t realize it was applicable to this story. I was focusing predominately on the last paragraph of the excerpt.

If true, this was a deeply stupid move. And I said “if” because I highly doubt the reportage is reliable.

“They should go to prison. Who are these freaks? Possibly endangering people and wildlife and for what? What gives them the right to do this?”

Reading is fundamental. In one case, a wildfire was headed to their house and ranch headquarters. They set a small backfire to successfully protect their home.

In the second case, they were doing a controlled burn of invasive juniper on their property. They called BLM first to check conditions and were told BLM was also burning that day so to go ahead. But got away and burned less than 100 acres of grass when it crossed over into the BLM side of the fence. The ranchers successfully put it out.

Stay in the city.

Sure, no arguments from me. Federal land is, in my opinion, a repugnant concept. I just didn’t understand the fires weren’t intentional and that people weren’t in danger.

Don’t let the agitprop get you excited. They try to make it sound like the ranchers were setting fires as protest or arson - NOT TRUE! They were burning rangeland as a part of good range management practices.

the feds should have been doing it, they are paid by the ranchers to manage and improve the range. If it wasn’t done, their livelihood would be severely threatened.

Trust me, those guys are more concerned about that land than you, me, or anybody else on God’s green earth.

They were put in jail for doing what was supposed to be done. I wouldn’t be surprised if they would have been heavily fined if they hadn’t burned and the invasive plants got out of control. Then AFTER they served their time, a different muddle-headed judge decided they should serve MORE time! I don’t know how long you’ve been in this country, but that’s NOT the way the law is supposed to work.

I’m digging through Google search results now and the AP has put out a story with this paragraph:

“Ryan Payne, a US Army veteran from Montana told “The Oregonian” he was among a group occupying the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.”

“to eliminate brush that could destroy their property if wildfires developed during the fire season.”

The first one they set was actually during a lightning started wildfire, and was done to protect against imminent danger.

going in and doing a Waco.
= = =

You can’t mean arson against helpless women and kids.

That would be terrorism.

If I have the correct story, these are ranchers who burn grazing land every couple of years to encourage forigable flora to grow. It’s been an accepted practice for the history of mankind.

They burned a pasture on their private land, but the fire spread to adjacent federal land and burned a couple of acres.

I another time, more reasonable people would not be bothered by this, but the current regime used terrorism laws to arrest, and convict the ranchers.

Not freaks, but victims of tyranny.

"When the government becomes pernicious, it is our right, nay, our duty to oppose tyranny and abolish a government that fails to adequately serve and protect its people."

How can we assess the difference between what's going on here

Thank you for the clarification.

What people need to understand as far as the fires is that they were set by the Hammonds to protect their property and I grasped that concept from what I had read or saw in a video from one of their supporters earlier.

It may seem that way to you, but you have no idea about what is going on here and just how far the feds have overstepped and how much they have lied.

And don’t let the hippies con you with their BS. Indians (or ‘native Americans’, as my daughter insists) practised clear-cutting, burning and other odious sins against Mother Gaia because it made for better hunting and was practical stewardship of the land, as opposed to saving snail darters.
The feds do firebreaks themselves. Other than that they are most effective in demanding rents for “their” land.

Yes, yes. I understand the gargantuan error I have made. The government is in the wrong, as usual. I don’t dispute the rights of landowners protecting their property. I probably should’ve gone on more than the excerpt, but I guess I will take this as a lesson to be less impetuous and more careful.
