Regrouping

JANUARY 22, 2016 ~ CONSISTENTCONSERVATIVES

This is an emergency means for us to keep in touch with our FRiends, who are real Conservatives, in case of purging. Or, if there is no purging, do we really want to continue our discussions in the forum where the owner despises us for not supporting his non-Conservative candidate?

My purpose is to figure out what to do to continue our discussions to advance Conservatism.

LOL...true.

In Paul’s description of the armor, there is a helmet, but no jousting visors mentioned.

Also, NOTHING to protect the back, so NO RETREAT!

I will have to compromise my conservative principals to save our country.

Well, there we have it. And I do understand that in politics, no one gets 100% of what they want. But, conscience may not be compelled.

Therefore, we are negotiating with ourselves. Some (all?) of us have non-negotiables.

Some of us might refer to The Ten Conservative Principles of Russell Kirk in that self-negotiation to try to find "wiggle room".

Some of us may conclude that the current emergency requires a pragmatic approach. Non-negotiables may be different there, if they exist at all.

I think both approaches deserve a hearing and should be challenged / defended with some degree of civility and respect.

Totally agree. Bickering and personal sniping have no value here.

This thread by Jim was to bring attention to it. It seems to be turning into another deflection from the original content. The question is an important one. If Trump is the nomination, will you vote for him?

It is the nature of almost every thread to go off on tangents. The track back functionality helps follow such and I consider some tangents to be features rather than bugs.

‘Also, NOTHING to protect the back, so NO RETREAT!’

Really? I always assumed a front-and-back breastplate.

I sense you may want to argue.

Of course I don't. I am, and always will remain, direct... but there is no point in arguing.

The fact of the matter is that, on this forum, from time to time you will encounter people who disagree with you. A disagreement is not an argument, to my mind. The first should entail an exchange of cogent responses, and the latter is more akin to trolling. In my disagreement with you at that time, I was rather gentle -- on purpose, because we have like minds about Trump -- but I got back something else.

and I will refrain from doing that.

Good.

This could be the reason I responded to your referenced post with Scripture. I will always respond with Scripture if continuous hate is spewed at me, no matter what anyone thinks or says.

Right, I get that, but please don't mistake simple disagreements in opinion with hate.

After being continuously slaughtered with so many insults, I could have very well mistaken you for one of the haters and responded with Scripture.

Ah! Progress! You are graciously accepting of the fact that things spun way out of control on your side. I responded in-kind, and for that, I have a part in it.

You can still hold that against me, that's up to you.

If I did hold it against you, I would not be having this conversation with you right now.

A disagreement should be met with a respectful set of responses, whereas trolling or argumentative styles, not so much. I guess, to put it in firearms terms: Be a sniper, not a shotgunner.

I took buckshot for no good reason. :)

Quick ping to JR so he sees our mutual progress in civility. I thank you, BFAC, for the reasonable response. I encourage you to remember me and from whence I come, so you don't shotgun me again. :)

Early in the day, some supposedly Cruz supporters were even making fun of Jim's amputation.

Good Lord. How vile. :(

(If these people can’t even vote to stop the US decline and push a few conservative principals per election, then they are not conservatives.)

BINGO.

I suppose...if it were a complete set, but the back is not mentioned, so who knows? The verses about the armor are preceded by “the command “STAND FIRM” so I never envisioned a back-plate.

The melee could get pretty rough-and-tumble for Romans unlike the primadonna phalanx which needed conditions to be perfect.

Trump’s positions are more conservative than anyone else. And he hasn’t wavered since the campaign began, unlike Cruz who couldn’t decide where he stood on amnesty. I still don’t think he knows - or doesn’t want to piss his donors off.

Hannibal used to study the slain on the battlefields. He noticed that the Romans almost always died facing the enemy.

Excellent post PJ.

It is the vile insults thrown repeatedly at me, not matter how eloquently or how detailed I explain why I support Trump that makes me not want to support Cruz in any fashion. If this is how he influences people to act, he’d be a horrible leader. Why, they almost act as if in a cult, spewing out keywords over and over, without thought!

Indeed. I believe that St. Paul, surrounded as he was by Roman Soldiers, used a very good analogy when he described our spiritual armor in Ephesian 6.

Scorekeeping is a losing proposition. As it is, there’s more than enough mud being flung around.

Just stop, on both sides, and eventually the conversations will mellow.

Not returning the vitriol defuses the situation and makes the other look foolish.
