#7: Joe Cocker: “You Are So Beautiful”

Joe Cocker record a ballad? Yes! And he brought his inimitable style to bear on the project. Note that the only accompaniment is a piano and a string section. The way his voice cracks at the end is heartbreaking.

#42: Barry Manilow: “It’s a Miracle”

He had started with Bette Midler in the New York gay bathhouse circuit and had made a splash the previous year by taking one of Chopin’s shortest piano pieces and turning it into an eight minute monstrosity, something for which I’ve never forgiven him. He stepped away from power ballads to do something up-tempo, and this was a huge hit. The producer was Ron Dante of the Archies.
