There's Still Time for a Serious Third-Party Presidential Run
The Atlantic ^ | 04/06/2016 | Russell Berman

It's not too late—yet—for Trump or an anti-Trump to make a credible independent bid.

How late is too late for an independent or third-party presidential run?

That question is becoming paramount as the Republican Party barrels through its primary season bitterly divided and with the chances growing that it will open its July convention without a nominee in hand. Conservatives resolutely opposed to a Donald Trump presidency have been investigating a third-party bid for weeks, hoping that if they can’t rally the party behind Ted Cruz then at least they’ll be to give the Never Trump movement an alternative not named Clinton in November. And the recent, if hardly surprising, demise of the paper-thin “loyalty pledge” that Republican candidates signed last year means that either Trump or Cruz could conceivably mount an independent campaign if they lose the GOP nomination in Cleveland.

The short answer is that no, it’s not too late for a third-party or independent run, and it might even be possible for someone as wealthy and well-known as Trump to launch a serious campaign as late as July. (Note: Serious does not necessarily mean winning.)

Just my honest opinion, but a 3rd party run by someone that even claims to have a Republican or conservative bent will ensure either Hillary or Bernie the presidency.

In a third-party deal....if you play up the Electoral College situation, and give Trump ten possible state wins...no one will cross with 270 votes.

This means it goes to the House. It means state-by-state, they vote. Once you cross the 25-state line, you win. The Republican national folks out of Fairfax will ensure that their representatives don’t vote for Trump.

I see this as a wasted circumstance. If Trump doesn’t win the convention....he cannot win with the Electoral College or a state-by-state House election.

The alternate measure for people if they feel Trump got cheated out of the Convention win....vote a straight Democratic ticket in the fall, and let the party know that you are fairly hostile, and won’t be coming back for a while.

Third party run by either Trump or GOPe hands Hillary the nomination.

that’s just an impartial fact.

If Paul Rino is the GOPe nominee and Trump got on all fifty state ballots as a mixture of Constitution Party, Libertarian and whatever, he could win.

Even Demonorats are fed up with the establishment.

You didn’t read the article, did you?

Trump could be the nominee for a number of parties (Constitution, Libertarian, etc.), as long as they already were on the ballot, which they will be. They drop their guy and slide in Trump.

zero.

was just stating a fact, not taking sides.

But it would seem to me the only chance republicans have is nominating trump.

one doesn’t have to love him to draw that conclusion.

I believe the media, the pundits, the GOP Establishment, the Democrat Establishment have it all wrong. I believe that the scenerio will be 100% different in June, 2016. I believe Hillary Clinton is not only a weak candidate, but that she has serious medical problems. She loses her voice on a regular basis, and it is not because of hard campaigning and using her voice too much. That is a sign of possible real problems. I also believe that she is qualified to be the POTUS...but she is unqualified with a lack of stamina, drive and command, that the POTUS job demands....again signs of existing health problems. Add to those signs. an overall weakness as a competitive candidate...and...it is really the Democrat Party that has a problem.

I also believe DJT will win the POTUS either as a Republican or 3rd party candidate!!! We shall see!!!

Why is it, with all this 3rd party talk, nobody ever talks about Bernie Sanders running as a Socialist or 3rd party candidate???

Why is the only 3rd party speculation regarding Republicans? There are plenty of Democrats backing Sanders who just do not want Hillary. Many of them say they won’t vote for Hillary in the general election. Why doesn’t this circumstance pave the way for Bernie and his supporters to mount a 3rd party candidacy for Bernie???

Probably because Democrats are more patient. They don’t shoot their own as readily.

Wrong. There may be some conservatives who mistrust Trump. But the guys who have been screaming out lies by the dozen about Trump every day in the social and major media are Democrats, liberals, and GOPe insiders.

The Atlantic knows, because they belong to that gang of media scum and liars.

The Democrats all want another Ross Perot to run as a third part candidate and ensure that Clinton gets elected.

The Clintons were boosted into the White House by a 3rd party rich businessman.

I am sure that's what they are angling for again. Bill did meet with Trump and aided in his decision to run.

Surely they won’t...nothing would surprise me anymore. Can we bring back the other Paul (Rand variety)? He seems great to me at this point.

Conservatives resolutely opposed to a Donald Trump presidency
********************************

The first thing conservatives want to conserve is the country. Without the rule of law and borders we don’t have one.
Phony conservatives oppose Trump because they don’t want the wall built, the laws enforced or the people pipeline shut down.

Anybody think Trump will belly up with as much as a half a billion of his own money to make a third party run...?

Remember he will be running against both parties...

His actual support is at best 40 % of conservative voting base, which many will no longer support him...

Tops he has 20 % of voting age people of all stripes...
