I was stunned over the weekend when Newt Gingrich went hard after Donald Trump for the real estate mogul's comments about the ethnicity of a judge overseeing a case involving Trump University.
*snip*
Given that back and forth, I reached out to Gingrich to see what he made of the hubbub and whether it had changed his generally positive views on Trump. It has not.
Here's what Newt told me:
Trump is going to be fine as a candidate. He is learning very rapidly. When [Ted] Cruz dropped out so early it took away the 60 days Trump and his campaign needed to get organized to lead the entire party and a general election campaign. As someone who never ran for office before and who has had an amazing 11-month run (replacing 16 more seasoned candidates including a number the Washington elite would have bet on), Trump has shown a remarkable ability to perform and to learn.
Trump's complaints about the judge and the law firm in the Trump University case are valid and reflect a growing pattern of politicized "justice." Criticizing the judge for his membership in a radical La Raza San Diego group would have been legitimate. Focusing on ethnicity was not.

I’m sure Trump knows where he’s going with this or he wouldn’t keep pushing it. Whether Newt is in on it - or whether he’s just being the loose cannon he has been known to be, we shall see.
At any rate, I don’t favor Newt as VP - too old and unpredictable. He would have value in another capacity though.
If not, the judge plans to destroy Trump with rulings against him and TrumP U.
Imagine what Hillary and her flying monkeys in the MSM would do with a ruling against Trump U.
Trump is absolutely correct in pursuing his case against the judge.
Republicans like Newt, Ayotte, Kasich, and the rest, as well as so-called "conservative media" like Brit Hume are nothing but poltroons, cowering at being called racists.
Mexicans are not going to vote for Repubs anyway. Repubs are not going to get Latino votes by condemning Trump.
in fact, they will lose non-Latino support by cowering.
Don’t let the DC Punditocracy fool you, Trump made points with calling out the Mexican bigot. The powdered wig class had to run and hide from the word Mexican, but Joe Sixpack knew exactly what he was talking about.
You do realize Hillary was making tons of commercials about Trump U to bash him and he destroyed them.
Pray America wakes
“Trump has laid a trap”
hmmm, I didn’t think about it like that. In hindsight, he has done this in the past and turned out to be 3 or 4 steps of everyone else (as in talking out the wall, deportation, and Muslims - which resonated with the voters).
There is no difference between the AA judge and those thugs in the street.
A proper Trump supporter should ALWAYS give Trump the benefit of the doubt. Don’t automatically assume the negative
Newt needs to be kicked to the curb.
Newt should know better than to open his mouth and insert his foot. Not the first time he has.
Newt and Trump exchange emails and text messages throughout the day...or speak by phone.
Translation: “Donald I’m still your pick for VP right? I can be very loyal Donald.”
Remember Bush rolling over and playing dead. Maybe if you can slut shame a liberal for an attack the next million of them will hold off....a bit.
I don't give Newt any credit.
This is the way Trump gets earned media attention. He first has to blow up an issue to get the full media spotlight on himself...and then he clarifies the issue.
As has been said over and over again, Trump has redefined politics in America. He controls the media and the media narrative.
As Trump has done time after time. He laid a trap for the media and the media took the bait.
Now that the media has run with the story that Trump has besmirched a judge merely because of his Mexican heritage, Trump brings out the fact that the judge is a La Raza radical who favors illegal immigration.
I wouldn't be surprised if the judge eventually recuses himself.
Hey Newt. Trying to take your knife back out of Trump’s back?
“Newt could have said all of this instead of saying Trump going after the judge was the worst mistake he could have made.”
But then Newt is Newt and couldn’t help himself.
Sort of like, The Snake. ;)
Agreed.
I'm wondering if Huckabee wouldn't be better at Trump's side, less likely to make message gaffes.
