Just commit to buying a gun a month, if possible.

Ouch. At the price of a decent quality gun, I haven't bought a single one. I don't think I could afford one a month.

380 Automatic. I have no use for a 380 but women like to shoot them. That’s a good enough reason to own one. I like the Walther just because it’s pretty and James Bond used one.

380 isn't my favorite but I own 2 as they are perfect for concealed carry and plenty effective enough at "normal" self-defense distances (for one who knows how to shoot) with the Critical Defense rounds.

My wife carries a 9mm in her purse so she "outguns" me on a daily basis....

Back to the story - going with weapons that use the ammo readily available at Walmart isn't a bad idea, but stocking up on ammo for the weapons you have is a better idea.

Bingo. It’s not about having a lot, it’s about getting the best.

Shoot what’s popular and readily available - 9mm, .40, 5.56, 7.62, 12ga.

If the other shoe drops, there won’t be a Wal-Mart open.

Most big box stores don’t stock the best self-defense ammo like Federal HST LE/Tactical and Speer Gold Dot. The best source of defensive ammo (and bulk range ammo) is online purchasing. It’s far cheaper and readily available. And, it’s delivered to your doorstep.

Area Walmarts don't sell handguns, but do sell ammo for them.

In this state the National Instant Criminal Background Check System is the only paper work required for purchase by the state or federals.

A pistol for close work

.22 bolt action for hunting small critters

.30 rifle for hunting big critters

.223 cal or 7.62mm with large capacity mags for keeping critters off the block

12 gauge shot gun for keeping critters off the porch.

Buy ammo every chance you get - I do cash at gun shows.

Then just buy ONE. Figure out what caliber you really need (9mm is a good place to start). Then buy that ammo as you can afford it. When you get some breathing space, I’d suggest going with a heavier caliber. But your friendly local shooting range should be able to advise.

"No .308 ?"

That was very surprising for me also. My AR-10 is my long range battle rifle.
