Trump Nearly Tied With Clinton in New Survey
Morning Consult ^ | 7/5/2016 | Eli Yokley

Donald Trump is almost tied with Hillary Clinton as voters’ first choice to be the next president, a new Morning Consult poll found.

According to the national survey, the presumptive Democratic nominee tops Trump, 41 percent to 40 percent, but her lead is within the poll’s margin of error of 2 percentage points. It’s the likely Republican nominee’s best showing in our head-to-head matchup with the former secretary of State since the general-election phase of the campaign began.

Morning Consult polled voters from June 30 through the July Fourth holiday, after a secret meeting between President Bill Clinton and Attorney General Loretta Lynch reignited the debate over her use of a private email server while serving in the Obama administration. On Tuesday, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey announced he would not recommend criminal charges against her.

In the newest survey, Clinton was down four points from the weekend before, while Trump saw just a one-point boost. Among independents in the two-way matchup, Trump was favored slightly to Clinton, 33 percent to 32 percent, with 35 percent of respondents undecided.

In a three-way matchup, including Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson, a handful of voter — 11 percent – said they would buck both parties and back the former New Mexico governor. Clinton maintains her slim 1-point margin over Trump in that scenario. Independents were split between the leading party candidates, 26 percent for Clinton and 28 percent for Trump. Another 19 percent of them said if the election were held today, they would vote for Johnson.

With the heightened prevalence of straight-ticket voting, an increase in turnout among the Democratic base in presidential-election years has proven a boon for that party, and voters’ responses from our new poll reinforced that notion.

A little more than four in 10 voters (43 percent) said they were more likely to vote for a Democratic congressional candidate than a Republican candidate. One-fifth of respondents said they either did not know or had no opinion. Slightly more independents said they support the Democratic candidate over the Republican candidate, but 44 percent said they didn’t know or had no opinion.

The national poll was conducted June 30-July 4 among a national sample of 2,001 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. See toplines and crosstabs.

Hillary has had a bad week which is going to get worse. The race has narrowed 4 points from last week and she is down 3, Trump up 1. I imagine that this race is going to stay static for awhile with some blips for the convention. I am still very bullish on a Trump victory this fall.

Most of the polls now are phony. There is a movement to steal the nomination from Trump and phony polls are the weapons that they are using.

"IGNORE ALL POLLS"

They cannot be trusted, they are more often than not used to advance the agenda of whoever is paying for the poll, in the vast majority of 'polls', they are used to cause doubt, disillusionment and discouragement on the part of Trump voters.

Treat polls as we treated the radio broadcasts of Tokyo Rose during World War II - nothing but enemy propaganda.

In response to Comey’s despicable decision this AM, the country should turn out en masse to vote for Trump, even if I don’t like him much.

With all the Democrats to include the bias pollsters [Dems] and the media [Dems] having complete hysteria, and the rest of the nutters, Trump is ahead.

The media pollsters assumptions and polling models are out of whack, which reflects their hysteria.

Polls are all over the place. At most, only one (or one result, shall we say) is right. The rest are wrong.

That means he’s really ahead, because we use the Electoral College.

Well after Comey declaring Killary guilty even though he’s not going to do anything about it her week is likely to get worse.

"First choice" for President?

Have they redesigned the ballots so that voters will now register their first, second, and third choices?

How would that work? Five points for a "first," three points for a "second" and one point for a "third"?

Actually, instant runoff voting would be a substantial improvement. It would require a constitutional amendment to implement it nationwide, but there's nothing stopping a state from using it to select electors.

Instant runoff works like this: You vote for your first choice, second choice, etc. until either all the candidates are ranked, or you just stop.

The first place votes are tabulated. If a candidate has a majority (50% + 1), then he/she is the winner.

If there's no majority, then the candidate that got the least #1 votes is eliminated. The #2 vote on those ballots are tabulated, and added to the totals from the first round. This process is repeated as many times as necessary, until a candidate has a majority of the tabulated votes.

You could vote for the Constitution Party candidate as #1, and for the Republican as #2. So, you can vote your conscience without feeling like you are wasting your vote, because your #2 vote would be used to defeat the Democrat.

Anyone voting for third party is effectively voting for Hillary.

This is a crucial election for the future of the country and every vote counts.

“her week is likely to get worse.”

I agree...Just like the IG report, this will open up some more eyes. Trump needs to stay away from condemning Comey and focus on the bullet points of what they found.

Thank you for the kind words FRiend, but nobody needs my permission to spread that around, if someone thinks something I post is worth anything at all, they automatically have my consent to repeat it and re-post it however they wish, from written comments to graphics.

On a personal note, after watching that two faced sonuvab*tch James Comey prostitute himself on TV today, I'm feeling pretty damn rotten, more so than usual, but I'm also feeling so mean that junkyard dogs would run in the opposite direction if I were nearby. I'm seeing red and it's all I can do to keep my damn powder dry.
