IN Georgia, if you are a CCW carrier, you are NOT legally required to state such. You can present your drivers license along with the CCW permit, and if the officers asks” Do you have any weapons” You need only answer “not any that you need be concerned about.’
I got that advice straight from a policeman.
Not any that you need to be concerned about? A cop making a traffic stop is concerned with ALL weapons. If a cop told you that, he’s a complete idiot.
Why would you do that other than to be an ass?
Take a certified GA concealed carry class.
“IN Georgia, if you are a CCW carrier, you are NOT legally required to state such”
This is correct. Personally I would hand the cop my license and CC license together and let him decided what he wants to ask about it. Just to avoid problems.
Mr. GG2 got pulled over for a taillight out last year and he handed both licenses over. The cop asked him if he was carrying and he said yes on his strong side with 2 mags on his weak side. He told the cop he had an XDM. Then the cop asked if he had any other weapons and Mr. GG2 said a Mossberg 500 tactical on the back seat and a stubby in the sidepocket of the driver’s door. The cop said “whoa!” and started laughing. Asked if they were all loaded and Mr. GG2 said if they weren’t they would just be fancy clubs. They both laughed, the cop went and ran the plates and then told Mr. GG2 to get the taillight fixed and have a good day.
Your demeanor has a great deal to do with interacting with law enforcement.
I'm thinking that would not go over very well. Coming across as a smart-ass rarely ends well during a traffic stop.
My rules for interacting with law enforcement: 1) Don't lie to the police. 2) don't run from the police. 3) Definitely don't fight with the police. 4) If necessary advise the officer(s) that you donn't consent to any abridgment of your constitutional rights.
I think I'll add a 5th: Don't be snarky with the police. I could see it turning out badly.
Why is a smart-assed reply necessary? Why not say you have a weapon and a permit to carry it? I do this all the time in SC. My permit and drivers license are together in my billfold. When the cop asks for my license at the DUI roadblock, I hand him both. This indicates a weapon is present with no threat to the officer. Most say thank you, sir, and I’m on my way. But a smart-assed remark is asking for a trifle ticket. Stupid and not necessary, and frankly disrespectful if someone doing a dangerous job.
Same for PA. No need to add tension to a situation. I am only going to say I am carrying a weapon if directly asked.
Colorado as well. BUT when they run your license they will know you have a CCW. It probably is a point in your favor to let them know right away. I keep my permit right behind my license in order to hand both over at the same time. I would rather avoid a problem than start one.
I would say that answer will not get a pleasant response. They will cuff you, and have you on the ground.
Be polite, be calm, and comply with EVERYTHING a cop tells you to do. You can sue later, but getting killed serves no purpose.
I'd be more inclined to say "yes sir" since your answer could be taken as a smart ass remark by a cop who might be having a bad day.......
