The New York Times published a great piece Sunday headlined "Electoral Map Gives Donald Trump Few Places to Go." Here's the crux of the article, which was written by the terrific Alexander Burns and Maggie Haberman:
Even as Mr. Trump has ticked up in national polls in recent weeks, senior Republicans say his path to the 270 Electoral College votes needed for election has remained narrow and may have grown even more precarious. It now looks exceedingly difficult for him to assemble even the barest Electoral College majority without beating Hillary Clinton in a trifecta of the biggest swing states: Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
That's right.
But there are two points worth adding to that analysis: 1) No Republican would have anything but a narrow path to the presidency in 2016 and 2) Trump's path as outlined by the Times to get to 270 electoral votes and the White House isn't implausible. At all.

But turnout will be critical. VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!
He wins this in the first hour, once New York and New Jersey go for him, its over.....
Yes he has a path, it’s called the American people.
Washington Compost. Need I say more?
They will try to steal this, voter turnout is the key. If we really had fair elections, Trump wins.
Maybe, but the mainstream media is now doing everything in their part to thwart his direct path to the American people. The MSM was only warming up during the GOP primaries. Now, it's for real.
Manipulated polls, slanted editorials, choreographed news headlines, keeping the limelight off Hillary except when Trump screws up, etc. Trump hasn't seen the worst of it yet.
Exactly. If he can get the Northeast Hillary is dead before they even vote in California. Trump could win California by “default” in spite of the ban since Carter.
Indeed, he may get Maine...and NH, and IA, and NV. He may only one EV from Maine.
That is more plausible IMHO than him winning PA, which is very plausible.
Should read that he may only need one EV from Maine.
But then, there is VOTE FRAUD :((
They do it :((
It works :((
Doubt if there ever has been an election without FRAUD :((
If he takes NY and NJ, it’ll be an early night.
I think that may be a stretch, but if he wins PA, OH and FL, it’s over for Cankles.
You think he has a chance to win NY or NJ..heck Id be happy with NJ but you really think it’s possible..if he wins either one break out the bubbly cause its time to PARTY
Trump has multiple paths to the nomination, not just what the Times and Cilizza outlined. As of now, Trump is leading in NV, NH and IA and should pick up 1 in ME’s 1CD. That gets him to 246 assuming he has Florida. Then he needs only 2 of 3 of OH, PA and VA to win. If Trump gets PA, then he will have VA and then other states open up. He would likely get CO as well and then states like OR, WI and MI start coming into play. Right now I think it’s looking like Trump 303-235 with the potential of tipping at about 330-335 if things break right.
I’m in NJ. Realistically, he cannot win here. Demographics don’t work and too many liberal moms in the suburbs. If Trump has a landslide, NJ will open up as a 3rd level state that he can win. 45/47% though is not out of the question for him. Same in CT. If he can do that it hurts her very deeply from a strategic standpoint.
I think NJ and NY are reliably Democrat, but both have seen no recovery at all, just a continued downward spiral. NJ did elect Christie twice (and he is a TEA Party tax-cutter, opposed by the teachers’ unions), but I don’t know if there are enough Americans left here to deliver it for Trump (and I’m not kidding - we’ve been losing jobs and American taxpayers for years, even losing an electoral vote to reflect it).
Precisely because of fraud, it’s critical that all reasonable people actually get out and vote — for Trump, to counter it.
Yeah I figured he stood no chance in NJ..Im in California for some reason people think he can win here, he cant..I love Trump but he has ZERO chance here in CA..I have seen only 1 Trump sign which was nice to see..but I have seen plenty of Bernie Sanders stickers on cars and lawn signs..nothing for Hitlary Clinton, not ONE..but she will carry this state..its not Ronald Reagan’s California anymore
Trump has got to connect with the independents in the battleground states and get the pubs to turn out in those states. If he stays focused, disciplined and acts like commander-in-chief instead of twitter-in-chief he wins.
