A campaign initiated by the National Association for Bilingual Education and the Santa Clara County Office of Education says a teacher who mispronounces a students name is causing a negative emotional state that can lead to poor academic success. The campaign, titled My Name, My Identity: A Declaration of Self, says on its website, Did you know that mispronouncing a students name negates the identity of the student? This can lead to anxiety and resentment which, in turn, can hinder academic progress.

This is shockingly stupid, not just because it’s moronic but also because of the unintended consequences. Wouldn’t acting like mispronouncing a name is a crime discourage teachers from using names at all? Liberals are not just petty tyrants at heart; they are stupid petty tyrants.

They’re inadvertently going to end up penalizing teachers that they’d want to protect. ESL people butcher names far worse than native English speakers.
Provide a pronunciation key for every name, that’s what they’ll have to do. And, teachers will still get tripped up on the hard ones. Thai names are especially challenging.

You have a wonderful way with words. I can’t wait to use that sentence, in writing and speech.
