A Lesson From Colombia’s Vote?

A reader writes:

I’m a Colombian living in the States who is an avid reader of your blog!

Yesterday Colombia had a plebiscite regarding the peace agreement with the Marxist guerrillas and, incredibly, the No won…

It’s is hard to explain all the reasons why this happened (even those who opposed the plebiscite “knew” it was going to be approved)…

Political leaders in some areas did not push their constituents into voting (they didn’t have anything to lose). The Caribbean coast, for example, is known for its corruption and how local leaders literally buy votes. However this time, there was not money for that…

The agreement was giving unprecedented concessions to the guerrillas: a given number of seats in the congress, and no jail time for their leaders (even those guilty of human right violations). Most of us want the peace in our country but believe that justice and jail time for those guilty of terrible crimes…

Interestingly I find an analogy with the ongoing situation with the presidential elections here in the States. Everywhere around the social media [in Colombia] you can read the outcry of those who voted yes.The ones who voted no stayed pretty much closeted until yesterday, and are now being called warriors and peace haters, bigots and so on (by the way the peace agreements had their fare share of LGBT ideology, so many conservatives also voted no for this reason).

Colombia right now is in the limbo, and maybe in five weeks America will be too…

Just like Brexit. The NYT analyzes why the No voters won this shocking upset.

I followed this Vote in Colombia. Polls leading up to the vote indicated that YES would win by 60/40 percent. Actual voting was 49/51, LOSING to the NO vote (against the proposed peace treaty with the FARC). That one caught everybody by surprise!

My cousin lived there for over 10 years when the cartels were going gangbusters, married a Columbian gal and now have a bright daughter (albeit, both the females are Odumbo supporters, so not that bright). When it was bad back then (perhaps in the 80s), they wanted to leave the country. It took over 2 years just to get out of that hell hole. Then they moved to Ecuador for a few years, and finally left that place because the crime was getting out of hand. Now in DC. I still wonder if DC was any better, but both he and his wife now work for the Fish and Wildlife service.

As much as I’d like to believe the Colombia and Brexit results are a harbinger of things to come in the US elections- I suspect our corrupt “leaders” are taking note to ensure that nothing similar will be allowed to happen here.

A Trump win would open the possibility of prison terms for the lying criminal and her former boss Obozo as well as all their little minions - and their Uber wealthy benefactors. If we’ve learned one thing from the IRS and FBI fiascos it’s that these people will stop at nothing prevent Trump from becoming president. The “law” means nothing to them.

Plurality, not majority. Very surprising, all due to the Panama Papers scandal. They will be the main party on the left. The good party might still come in first. Who knows about government formation, the Pirates would probably be clueless about how to govern.

Anyway, great news in Columbia! I WTFed when I saw about this "peace deal" with terrorists and that "yes" was leading and most politicians wanted it. The NY times is whining it lost so you know what's what.

Well, Iceland defaulted and years later, they’re still standing. Good for them.

FARC is bad news. Speaking of “Battlestar Galactica”, you can’t have peace with them anymore then the Cylons.
