Trump’s win vs. Reagan’s blowout: Why 2016 is NOT 1980 (Endorsed by Mark Levin)
Conservative Review ^ | November 18, 2016 | Paul Kengor

Posted on 11/18/2016 9:24:16 AM PST by conservative98

Beginning last summer, I wrote a series of articles for Conservative Review comparing Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan. The series was inspired by Trump enthusiasts insisting that their man was the closest thing to America’s next Ronald Reagan. Donald Trump was no less than “another Reagan.” Most central to the Trump-Reagan thesis was the curious insistence that the underestimated Trump, just like the once-underestimated Reagan, would rise up and crush Hillary Clinton in Reaganesque fashion. It would be a landslide.

Don't Miss A Tweet Profile Picture Conservative Review @CR Follow Well, with the historic vote of Tuesday, November 8, 2016, and Trump nabbing the presidency from the grasp of Hillary Clinton, I’ve received many emails from Trump enthusiasts claiming vindication. One emailer told me that Donald Trump will be chiseled on Mt. Rushmore one day, the end-game of his Reaganesque march and crowning “landslide” victory. Yes, the emailer used precisely that word, and repeatedly demanded that I concede the “landslide.”

It’s like 1980 all over again.

Before addressing how wildly inaccurate such claims are, I want to pause to congratulate Donald Trump, his team, and his devoted followers. I also want to tell them that they’re damned lucky, and in their heart of hearts, they should know it. Trump could have very, very easily lost, and really probably should have, as I’ll show in a minute by reviewing some of the shocking data.

Really Mark? I’d like to know just how much b of that so called popular vote was illegal voters, multiple voters and plain old fraud. A lot of dreamers were flowing into Cali where they don’t necessarily check for U.S.CITIZENSHIP before letting them vote. Thank GOD and the founding fathers we do have an electoral college. California still only gets 55 electoral votes no matter how many illegitimate voters there are...

I think Obola’s releasing all the Haitian illegals in Arizona today Trump would have deported them all back to Haiti. All the others will be bussed back their country of origin. That’s the way I hope it will be. Wages and jobs will grow trust me. People that have given up will come out of the shadows.

From the people who insisted that Trump could never win.

And the same people who insisted a Cubanadian was eligible to be President.

Fake Conservative Review would be more accurate.

We just came up with a couple of reasons why the two elections are alike and I think there are many more. Both are huge populists, etc., etc.

Perhaps the smartest tactic that Trump used was not portraying himself as a conservative. He took plenty shots as an anti-establishment candidate, but it allowed him to pick up those Reagan Dems he needed to win.

The libs don’t really hate or fear him because Trump is racist— they fear him because he is highly successful and intelligent. Unlike the gov’t hacks and boobs on their side of the aisle.

Donald Trump had an incredible victory and defeated not only the Clinton Crime Family but the entire establishment, the media, the Democrats and the Republicans. Remarkable achievement.

Mark Levin's loudmouth radio show is hard to take. He's a shouter. Gives me a headache. How do people stand it?

AND put measures in place to prevent vote fraud. They do that, and with even a half-decent job on the merits (and I’d anticipate better than that), there’ll be a Republican dynasty for a generation.

2016 is not 1980 - Levin is right.

Now we are aware of the mistakes of the past, and won’t repeat them (or, at least, we have a shot at doing this).

No bad Supreme Court appointments.

No getting snookered on immigration.

No getting snookered on delaying spending in exchange for tax increases NOW.

No signing away 2nd Amendment rights merely to restore some measure of sense to existing, unconstitutional, laws.

Etc., etc.

P.S. I proudly voted for Reagan 4 times (2 primaries, 2 generals), and believe him to have been the best President of my lifetime. But we have a significant chance of having Trump be MUCH more effective against the Left.

Levin can stick his ideological purity where the Sun don’t shine - it has gotten us NOTHING at best, and gotten us both ignored and slaughtered in reality. Trump has a take-no-prisoners attitude, combined with the speed of action of a great businessman, combined with a deep and abiding love of this country and its people. All things considered, Trump is in a better position to positively affect this nation than Reagan, and I believe that he will do so.

Exactly. They have no reason to fear a racist if he were one, unless they think he’s going to be a better racist than they are.

I thought Levin was a never Trumper until the last week of the campaign. Am I wrong about that? I dont want to spread falsehoods so if I got that wrong, please let me know.

‘it’s good to be warned ahead of time and take things seriously now.’

What would Trump do without Levin? Trump is so inept and intelligence-challenged, it would never occur to him to think ahead strategically. It’s a miracle a guy like Trump—who struggles with checkers, never mind chess—was able to beat even one professional politician, much less eighteen of them. Without Levine’s insights, Trump would be clueless!

Gives me a headache. How do people stand it?

My other choices are a chiropractor who hawks alternative cures and a Liberal who shouts even louder than Levin.

“but they definitely bagged on him nonstop. “

I remember the Reagan era, and even afterwards, yes, they bagged on Reagan nonstop, just repeating lie after lie until it became “truth.” He was a truly great man. What a president.

And Trump does remind me of him, somewhat. The courage of his convictions. He actual love of the nation. His boldness. Trumps more of a “street fighter” type, though, that is a difference.

Trumps win is more historic than Reagan’s win.

First, EVERYBODY opposed Trump. Even his own party.

Second, places like California, Colorado, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington states were all still Republican majority states in 1980. They have only become Democratic dominant since Reagan left office. When you start with California, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Michigan with their total 138 electoral votes, you almost have a Democrat lock on the presidency and a Republican has to make up a hell of a lot of states to counter that.

OK, Texas starts you off with 38, so the Democrat still has a clean 100 vote advantage right out of the box. Reagan did not face that.

Trump’s victory was more impressive in that he had coattails, Reagan didn’t.

Did Reagan suffer the systemic MSM assault? No.

In the alternate reality you live in.

But in the universe where Reagan was elected, he was absolutely savaged by the press day in and day out for YEARS before the campaign, during the campaign, and as President.

He fought against rigged polls that had him losing right up to the election, AND unlike Trump, he had a serious third party challenger from the Republicans he also had to defeat.

This isn't an article by Levin. The author is correct and you guys need to wise up. The states that Trump flipped were razor thin and he could easily have lost the Electoral College.

Continuing to attack people on the same side of the aisle is not going to win us the next election.
