TVs efforts to revolutionize the way its audiences are measured in an increasingly digital world may be about to hit a snag, thanks to an argument over the quality of a new yardstick.
In a letter sent earlier this week, NBCUniversals top ad-sales executive told Nielsen, the company devising a metric to tabulate audiences watching TV and streaming video across multiple outlets, that the system, which some executives hoped might be in place sometime in 2017, does much more harm than good and is not ready for release.
The media industry is in dire need of clear and comprehensive total audience measurement, said Linda Yaccarino, chairman of advertising sales and client partnerships at NBCUniversal, in a letter to Nielsen executives dated December 13. But Nielsens current solution in its current form fails to deliver on this objective, she said.

The Suits are scared, especially after Mr. Trump's election.
Best. Election. Ever. EVER! :)
TRANSLATION: “This will devastate our rate card!”
I think you are right.
...nobody watches the NEWS any more...wonder why?
They don’t understand...ha ha
Translation: we don’t want our advertisers find out they were paying for fake ratings.
It oh, no bonuses for you.
Call it the “Trump effect.”

No, no, it’s the Russians that hacked the Neison ratings.
A Comcast property.
What’s an NBC? It’s been years since I’ve tuned in. Wouldn’t miss it if it were taken off the lineup.
I think that many people have figured out that journalism is basically a sham or con.
This is exactly what it is.
I came to the conclusion long ago that people who watch TV all the time suffer from ADD, are intellectually lazy, have few if any independent thoughts in their heads, and a good portion of their dwindling audience are likely mentally ill.
Not to mention the fact studies find long term gawking at television jackassery causes and or is a factor in developing Alzheimer’s disease.
I agree - if there was a real count all the alphabet networks would suddenly take a dive.
And I wonder about Nielsen. They have a big incentive in inflating the numbers, and there is a big opportunity for fraud. How do we know that there is no kickback to Nielsen for manipulating numbers?

NBC is Comcast and Comcast is an American enemy
I don't know about the Nielson company doing anything to skew the numbers, but they don't have to. My experience in being selected as a Nielson viewer for a week is that just being selected means viewing habits change. Friends ask you to watch their favorite shows, and you do--even though you would never watch those shows if given a choice. I don't like TV much, but I certainly watched it more than usual for that week.
We were recently surveyed to be a Nielson family and I'm not sure how we will handle it if they want us to go the next step.
I used to watch a huge number of shows, but now the relatively limited shows we watch are mostly online and on-demand. We only have basic cable and then only because it cost the same as Internet alone.
Heck, there's not much worth watching. I would rather listen to my Rush 24/7 app and catch up on his show than watch most things on television. It doesn't help that we hate commercials.
When a news network gives you five minutes of new news an hour, you realize your time is much better spent getting your own news off the Internet. At least then you don't have to recalibrate so much for liberal bias.
