James Hansen’s controversial sea level rise paper has now been published online

**SNIP**

A lengthy, ambitious, and already contested paper by longtime NASA climate scientist James Hansen and 16 colleagues appeared online Thursday in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussion, an open-access journal published by the European Geosciences Union. The paper, entitled “Ice melt, sea level rise and superstorms: evidence from paleoclimate data, climate modeling, and modern observations that 2 ◦C global warming is highly dangerous” is now open for comment — peer review in this journal happens in public.

And given how much attention the work has already received, it’s likely to generate plenty of comments from fellow scientists.

The study raises the possibility of a more rapid rate of sea level rise in this century than forecast by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, whose research is widely regarded as the gold standard of climate research — but also often criticized for being too conservative.

One of them — Kevin Trenberth of the National Center for Atmospheric Research — strongly criticized the study, saying that “there are way too many assumptions and extrapolations for anything here to be taken seriously other than to promote further studies.”

Maybe Hansen can take up writing comic books.

I guess since none of he previous predictions have come true, he decided to make some new ones, for out into the future, of course.

This time he hit his own beehive, so he might finally get some criticism.

Where does the water come from that will raise the level of the oceans? Not from the oceans. From the air? How much rain do you think is needed. From melting ice and snow? How much ice and snow must melt?

A few things. The oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, so land covers 30%. What volume of snow, and what volume of ice must melt to raise the oceans by a specific amount? Are there any geologists who haven’t turned their minds over to liberalism and who can calculate this correctly?

Private mail to me if you can.

So can I speculate by buying acreage in Bakersfield , hoping it will end up as coastal property?

Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner wrote a better one and sea level is actually his area of expertise.

Claim That Sea Level Is Rising Is a Total Fraud
Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner

Sea levels began to rise 18k years ago at the end of the last glacial period. They have risen about 135 meters since then which is an average of 7.5 millimeters per year. That is an average of 750 mm per century (29.5 inches) which is far more than the average over the last century.

From 1880 to 2000 sea level rose about 20 cm or just under 8 inches. Far less than the nearly 30 inches per century average over the last 18,000 years.

I was going to ask how much it has risen over past dozen millenia. They still find towns underwater.

With modest changes to the assumptions you could get 2 ◦C global cooling.

Hansen has received a lot of money from those with a vested interest in promoting global warming caused by you.

The science to support AGW has never been there, so the warmists change the subject when it is brought up. Their papers and presentations never identify in plain English assumptions, data, and methodology.

They have been given billions of dollars to prove that man is no good. That is NOT the scientific method!

FINAL WORD concerning sea level rise...

JEREMIAH 5:22
‘Do you not fear Me?’ declares the LORD. ‘Do you not tremble in My presence? For I have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea, An eternal decree, so it cannot cross over it. Though the waves toss, yet they cannot prevail; Though they roar, yet they cannot cross over it.

It’s not just ice and snow. Water expands when it gets warmer, so the sea levels would rise in a global warming scenario even if there were no glaciers melting.

Well, that depends on whether you want to make money, or sacrifice some of your wealth on the alter of the AGW god.

Notice there's no run on seaside properties owned by the people who claim to be true believers? They don't think Malibu or South Beach will be under water in our lifetime.

Kind of a glass half full or half empty situation here.

The Left would say the end is near.

Those on the right might say the end is in sight, but then they wouldn’t definitively declare what would end.

Perhaps it would only be the Leftist propaganda.

Yep, we’re in an interglacial period so sea level does rise. Look at the interglacial 120k years ago, sea level was 8 meters higher than it is now. But 8 inches in the last century can’t be called “runaway” or “accelerated” sea level rise when the average for the last 18 centuries has been 30 inches per century.

#FakeScientists have quite a capacity to ignore real scientific findings.

We need to find a way to stop the earf’s tectonic plates (or whatever they’re called) from diving under one another and fast. Or at least in another billion years or so.

The prophecy raises the possibility blablabah... There, corrected.

Since you mention coefficients of expansion for sea water all the components of global land mass also have coefficients of expansion over a much broader temperature range than sea water.4

Is it a wash? Dunno and don’t care to fall down that rabbit hole.

It’s more often criticized for being completely wrong.
