A Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, collided with a commercial vessel east of Singapore early Monday morning local time, the Navy said.

There were 10 sailors missing and five injured, the Navy said.

The collision with the merchant ship Alnic MC occurred east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore at 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time, as the McCain was on its way for a routine port visit in Singapore, the Navy said.

With all the recent focus on the military accommodating transexuals and ensuring that the taxpayers are on the hook for their surgeries and counseling, etc., perhaps we would be better served if the military was allowed to re-focus on basic military operations so that our ships are not running into other ships.

Actually its quite consistent. Since the Navy now believes in placing together what God has explicitly placed asunder, then it now places ships together (if for a moment, and not consensual) what normally are to be kept asunder.

It baffles me too. When I was in the Navy, there were a number of eyes on the bridge and in CIC while underway and at anytime during the day and night. OOD, JOOD, BMOW, Quartermaster, helmsman, lee helmsman, JL phonetalker, forward lookout, aft lookout and the crew in CIC.

Good insights.

I’m a ground pounder. What is the difference between an Able Bodies Seaman vs. an Ordinary Seaman?

Wow, and to repeat, what is it with our ships being hit by merchant vessels? Don’t we have radar warning or lookouts or something?

Is it possible to have the same person/persons aboard the McCain AND the Fitzgerald? Officers were relieved of command I assume, how about others?

Naval aviation is in bad shape, too. For instance, many F-18 Hornets are not able to fly right now.

Sounds serious.

2nd major collision recently. Sounds suspicious.

“I guess the affirmative action navy is working out well. Obama clearly put officers who had the right politics above the people with the right skills in place.”

I found this strange:

Commanding Officer is from Puerto Rico:

Executive Officer is from Puerto Rico. Same last name:

Apparently the libs are already criticizing POTUS regarding his response to this incident. When his helicopter arrived at the White House, a reporter shouted out a question about the incident. Trump responded, grimly, “That’s too bad”. Clearly he will have more to say soon, but was not prepared to get into more detail at the time. But apparently the left, who hates our military and our national security, doesn’t feel his comment showed sufficient concern. Incredible. You can’t make this sh*t up.

Yes, yes, YES!

I assumed that an after-incident housecleaning would have been a priority immediately after the USS Fitzgerald collision, step up training and DISCIPLINE. My assumption may have been optimistic.

But as an aside, what sane man wants to land on a carrier deck, at night, in weather, in an A/C from the lowest bidder?

It’s like practicing bleeding.

Any warship is so much more maneuverable than merchant vessels that ancient technology should be able to keep them safe in shipping lanes.

I would look first at training and qualification standards plus operating procedures.

There is quite a history of collisions between Naval vessels. The last worst one was when the carrier USS Kennedy near-totalled the USS Belknap. And then the Kennedy did the same to the USS Bordelon a year later.

Also, it seems likely that deployments have increased in these especially busy waters as the USN has increased numbers of vessels in East Asia.

We rely far too much on electronic gadgets and gizmos.

I think I read somewhere the Air Force is starting to teach its navigators how to use sextants and not rely as heavily on GPS. I hope that is true.

On top of that, when SAC went away the tankers went to Air Mobility Command and they got rid of the navigators. If the SHTF and GPS dies I wonder how they are going to tank the bombers on a SIOP run?

The pool reporter who asked the question:

"Steve Herman‏Verified account @W7VOA ·
Unclear whether @POTUS had been informed of missing and injured sailors when he responded. Media wasn't aware of that info at the time. "

So Trump wasn't aware of seriousness.

Trump got a tweet up:

"Donald J. Trump‏Verified account @realDonaldTrump ·
Thoughts & prayers are w/ our @USNavy sailors aboard the #USSJohnSMcCain where search & rescue efforts are underway. "

Thank you for asking. An ordinary seaman is an entry rating, no experience necessary. With no experience or training one can be hired as an OS. If the OS sailing for one year, he or she can take US Coast Guard administered exams to become an able bodied seaman, AB. The AB are more skilled and most have the experience to steer a ship under the direction of a licensed deck officer (more training, more sea time and passing exams). Also, now more formal training is required for all positions in the deck and engine departments of a merchant ship. I am a hawsepiper-I obtained three years of seatime and went to navigation school for four months. Other officers have gone to the US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) or one of the six state maritime academies.

The civilian dirtbags running Obama’s Navy were more interested in semen exchange than seamanship.

Some Japanese language media outlets are reporting the collision was with a Liberian flagged oil tanker. Haven’t seen any official confirmation of that.
