Iraq is allied with Iran. Erdogan is an Islamist. None of them is on our side.

Kurdistan would give us an ally in the region and keep the Mad Mullah’s away from Israel’s door.

I’ve always thought this was a good idea. Hey, even a blind Joe Biden (squirrel) can a find a nut once in a while.

Should the Kurds of northern Iraq succeed in their independence ambitions, it would create the possibility for the rise of the first secular, liberal nation in the Middle East since Israel’s 1948 declaration of statehood. Now is the time for President Trump to act decisively and back this movement before it’s too late and a momentous opportunity falls by the wayside.

I would term it the first chance at a truly moderate nation in the Middle East, since Israel.

A seeming nod to a 'liberal' entity is a massive mistake IMO.

Liberal = Leftist = Democrat = Socialism = Communism

These days it also means ANTIFA and BLM.

Keep the Leftist descriptors out.

FWIW; Trump has already said we are not taking sides.

Now, could we make things go easier on the Kurds? Give them back channel support?

I don’t think they are abuse in Iraq as they are in Turkey.

I think we need to help the Kurds. Not taking a side is de facto siding with the Iraqis. On this one, I strongly disagree with the President.

You are sadly mistaken about frindship with the Kruds. Those in charge and not the YPK or commie rebel groups who are no one’s friend. The US and Israel have long maintained a close relationship with the Kruds; I am quite sure only Iran is nuts enough to encrouch upon this area inside Iraq. Me thinks this is the trip wire that will give Trump the free hand to bomb Iran.

Especially now that they're under attack from Iraqi troops and (mainly) Iranian fighters.

Fake news alert.

That would start a regional war, and turn every ally in the region against us.

The Kurd’s are not good guys. They just don’t target us for their terrorism.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is deeply involved in the fight on the side of the Iraqis.

The Kurds have been as close to good guys as it gets, and they’ve been our strongest ally in this fight. They also shield Christian and Yazidi refugees.

Now, they need our support. Or do we want a terrorist regime having hegemony over he whole Middle East?

The article is old news. Iraq has captured the oil wells. The Kurds ran away, just like they always do. The region will remain part of Iraq.

The US is helping the GCC settle this. It’s thier fight not ours.

They don’t need our help.

Our military is not for use as a hire an Army thing.

If the Kurd want their own territory, let them have it. We have never supported the right side in these wars. Evidently, we don’t do something correctly.

It gives us a land-locked liability that isnt remotely strong enough to defend itself from incursions from Iran, turkey, and rump Iraq....not to mention ISIS.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is deeply involved in the fight on the side of the Iraqis.

You mean against their common enemy ISIS, so what?

You're still fake news and there is no ongoing fighting in Kirkuk...much less any involving the Iranian military.

Do you think Kirkuk is the entire fight?

ISIS has lost most of its territory and much of its force, thanks to the US and the allies, not the least of which is the Peshmerga.

The Iranians are making an alliance with the Iraqi regime. We do not want the Murderous Mullahs to be the hegemons in the region, especially since they’re nuking up.

How do you propose that we stop them?

You’re probably thinking about the PKK. Not all Kurds are like them.

Texas Fossil speculatied that the US pressured the Kurds to not fight the pro-Iran militias.

The thought of Turkish tanks getting clobbered brings a smile to my face. Especially if it’s done by the Kurds

Erdogan is an Islamist who wants to rebuild the Ottoman Empire

Islam is the religion of Anatolia, Arabia, and North Africa.

Wilson's destruction of the four great empires was a terrible mistake, and if Turks can again rule Arabs and the Mahgreb the world will be a more peaceful and happier place (as will Europe be if Kurz really wants in to the Visegrad group).

The alternative - the elimination of Islam - is not feasible under present circumstances, not until Jesus comes.

The only decisive action we should take right now is to tell the entire region to grow up and leave them alone

+1.

American military interventions since 1953 have caused catastrophic damage to the nation and to our safety. We are not the British (and neither are they, any more). We are not the Romans.

Which of us would not trade our internal situation of 1950 for that of 2017?
