Dionne: Trump era is further degrading politicians
San Jose Mercury-News ^ | October 19, 2017 | by E.J. Dionne Jr.

Posted on 10/19/2017 12:22:25 PM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

Permit me to confess: I am one of the very last people in the United States who does not consider the word “politician” to be an insult. On the contrary, the work politicians do is important because politics is a good and essential thing in a free society. It’s the degradation of politics in the Trump era we need to worry about, not politics itself.

President Trump has always prided himself on being an anti-politician. This is supposed to be one of his greatest assets. But he has thrown our government into chaos and our country into tumult precisely because his disrespect for politics and what it requires leads him to debase our public life. He offers a torrent of lies, willfully tries to tear the country apart.

Many of Trump’s lies are hideously personal. His false charge that President Obama failed to phone or speak to the families of members of the armed services killed in the line of duty was particularly sordid.

Sorry, but all Republican politicians who take their obligations seriously must stop rationalizing the irrational and say what has long been obvious, that Trump’s way of doing business is unproductive, erratic, mean and scary. Until this happens, Republicans deserve to be seen as enablers of a dangerous presidency.

Alas, you can count on GOP leaders to maintain their complicity until the tax cut that is their lodestar is enacted into law. On this question, Trump and his party are at one in offering misleading claims that their bill is designed primarily to help average Americans when in fact its largest benefits will flow to the very wealthy.

But is a tax cut worth the price of colluding to undermine an honorable profession?

To my mind, the largest dis-qualifier for a politician seeking

an office is when they publicly say “I always wanted to be

a/the _______________”

Someone wanting something that badly is reason enough to deny

to them, IMO.

When guys like Dionne and his employers (Amazon/Washington Post) stop printing anonymous sordid attacks every day, there will be no need to respond in kind.

Rather than being “one of few that holds.. ‘politician’ to be an insult,” it is considered a compliment to the nearly 1/2 of the country that want a totalitarian leftist government to take over everything. You know, people like you, dionne.

I remember this asshole from the 1980’s.

He was a communist-left liberal back then too.

The abrupt downward trajectory started in 1993. 1989-1992 was a rough segue when the GOP suddenly decided to raise taxes after “Read My Lips” George the Ist raised taxes.

2001 brought us George the 2nd who raised the nose a bit, but then failed when he decided a mid east war was due instead of a mere extended punitive military expedition. I swear that man said we weren’t going to do any ‘Nation Building’ , but lo and behold here we are 16 years later, still spending money on the war that should have ended halfway through George the 2nd’s second term.

2009 brought us back into a vertical drop when the ‘anointed one’ violated his oath week after week, month after month without putting a stop to it.

2017 is shaping up better in some ways, but the GOP is imploding because of #nevertrump Republicans. At our current rate, GOP will lose house and senate in 2018 because they refused to support the President and fight back against the swamp along with Trump.

2021 is the end of the U.S as we know it today. We’ll only have 2 parties represented by the Liberal and the More Liberal.

You can’t defame or degrade a politician.

(Nothing you might say fully expresses the true horror of their existence)

I guess Dione thinks that a certain Democrat POTUS sticking a cigar up an Intern’s vagina in the Oval Office was not very degrading.

LOL. According to this schmuck the level of discourse is coarsened when the right fights back!

Elected officials on the right have, for the most part, refrained from the type of vicious attacks that the left has engaged in. Politicians on the` left routinely has attacked the right with charges of being heartless, racist and greedy and those on the right did not respond. Trump does not hesitate to stand for what he believes in and to get his hands dirty when he is falsely attacked.

I’ve been waiting for this since Reagan left the public eye. When the left calls a GOP officeholder racist for promoting a policy I agree with (for example cutting taxes), they are calling me racist for agreeing with that officeholder. When the GOP pols fail to defend themselves forcefully it is as if they are agreeing with the left as to their (and my) motives for supporting the so-called racist policy.

So I endorse completely the Trump counter-attack. If the left wants to engage in civil discourse rather that name-calling, perhaps they should stop the name-calling.
