That’s the only way elephants will be preserved in Africa. Without hunting money, their will be no parks, conservation or protection. So instead of a few elephants taken through hunting, you’ll have elephants killed by the 1000’s through pouching, angry villagers, and lions.

It's like the US using hunting fees to help regulate game animals.

The bottom line these are sovereign countries even the corrupt ones, who are still independently sovereign, who do maintain their animals for profit and protect them for future enjoyment.

There are two major reasons.

First, the elephants are worth money to the poachers when they are killed. It is not a great deal of money compared to what the elephant is worth to a trophy hunter, but much more that the poacher can get otherwise.

Second, the elephants are considered pests that raid farms, destroy crops, and kill people. Poachers are considered sort of local heroes to get rid of the pests, and they spread a little money around.

Agree with you 100%. “Trophy” hunting of wild animals is NOT the pride of mankind but its grotesque shameful DISGRACE.

Legal elephant hunting is keeping the elephant from extinction.

When the elephants are not worth anything to the local people, who view them as pests, the elephants go away and the local poachers become heroes.

Elephants breed to overpopulate the available habitat.

Either the government kills them, which costs money, sport hunters kill them, which brings in money, or poachers kill them, which wastes most of the elephant.

Those are the choices.

The optics are very bad for Trump on this . He needs to reverse the reversal , and announce a fund / strike force to either co-opt or kill the poachers and disrupt any illicit trades associated with big game killing . I do not support big game hunting . There are better ways to address this problem without allowing the killing of these great animals . The big game hunters can get their thrills elsewhere ...

The same idiocy happened with DDT. The liberals said it was bad for the environment. It didn’t matter that it kills mosquitoes that carry malaria...They countered, “I don’t care, it’s bad for the environment.” DDT was banned and 100 million people died from malaria because of the ban. But a least bed-wetting liberals felt good about themselves.

Same with legal elephant hunting. “Hunting elephants is beyond the pale. An atrocity!!”, cries the neo-jerk nut-less liberal & bedwetting psuedo conservative. But the monies that come in from legal hunting provide parks, park rangers and protection again poachers, lions and angry villagers. “I don’t care, cries the idiot reactionary, ban the hunting of elephants!!” So, legal hunting of elephants is banned and instead of a few elephants killed you have 1000’s killed. When you have large carnivores near people (which is increasingly the case with Africa’s expanding population), then either there is a financial reason for keeping them around, or the locals will exterminate them.
