Businessman and combat veteran John James has the inside track to the Republican nomination for Senate in Michigan after Rep. Fred Upton dropped plans to run and opted for re-election to the House.
James, a first-time candidate, outperformed Upton in public and private polling. That Republican primary voters prefer a novice outsider to a respected lawmaker with a lengthy record of accomplishment reveals the extent to which rejection of the political establishment is dominating GOP politics.
You want someone who is real. Thats how President Trump got elected, said Rep. Paul Mitchell, R-Mich., who broke ranks and endorsed James over Upton when the congressman was still considering a Senate bid, in an interview with the Washington Examiner.
... Uptons 30 years of service in Washington remained a glaring liability...In the current environment, it's a vulnerability, and it showed up in Uptons private polling, according to sources that are familiar with the data, in addition to the public polling. Last week, a survey for MIRS News showed Upton well ahead of Young, but trailing James by 5 percentage points.
Upton had challenges, said a Republican operative monitoring the race. He would have been the Jeb Bush of the primary.

This could be good news because Upton's 30 years in Congress wouldn't exactly give him a message of being able to say Stabenow has been there too long and it is time for a "change in leadership." Now the question is can John James raise the cash to mount a full campaign against her? He's a fresh face to politics - so he could be a very formidable candidate with cash to bring his name ID on par with Stabenow's or just token opposition without it.
Or is he running for Governor?
I’m afraid people in MI may “stab” us again with Stabenow.

I believe Bill Schuette is still in the race, as is current Lt. Gov. Brian Calley.
John James sounds like a very worthy opponent for the Stabber in Michigan.
Wish him the best in the primary and general election!
I dunno. You need someone that everybody knows. Like when the legislatures did the picking. Sounds like a sacrificial lamb.
Thanks for the post; link. HOORAY John James!
Oops. I screwed up. Both those candidates are running for governor, not US Senate.
Never mind.
The only part of Fred “Light Bulb Slayer” Upton with whom I’d want to associate is is his niece and her newly beringed husband. Their reps match reality.
I saw him on Fox today. Impressive young man.
I signed up to volunteer for him many months ago. I think he’s a good one.
Schuette for governor would rock my world. I can’t even breathe and think it could come true at the same time.
Just the noobs in Detroit.
