Illinois declined in population again in 2017, losing its spot as the fifth-largest state in the nation to Pennsylvania, according to census data released Wednesday.
Illinois lost about 33,700 residents, dropping the total population to 12,802,023, the greatest numeric population loss of any state. Pennsylvania saw a slight increase, and with a total population of 12,805,537, has outranked Illinois for the first time in years, based on U.S. Census Bureau figures from July 1, 2016, to July 1, 2017.
This is the fourth year in a row that Illinois population decreased, a troubling trend, according to William Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution.

Deep blue. Move the capitol there. Make Virginia red again.
People in IL couldn’t park a bicycle straight; oh, wait, that was George Wallace speaking of liberals in the 1968 race against Nixon and HHH!
That’s a shame.
I understand their wanting to leave the “Land of Lincoln” but hope they leave their unLinconlike politics up North.
My state, NC, is sort of neck and neck with GA, we’ve crossed 10 million in population and are growing fairly quickly in raw numbers but percentage isn’t nearly as impressive as for a small state like Idaho. I expect NC to gain a House seat next go round.
Please don’t move to WI. We love our Governor.
Minnesota is at serious risk of losing seat in Congress
Unfortunately a good many of those seem to be liberals from the Soviet Northeast.

VA is too Commie Red right now.
Thanks SMGFan. The drop in state IQ is in the hundreds of millions.
George was right on many things.
I'd bet those leaving are the productive ones, and probably fairly conservative - at least as Yankees go...
Wow, my Mom’s birth state and where she grew up. My uncle still lives there. My grandparents lived in ID most of their lives. Just shows people want to live in true American conservative states. Too bad so many are discovering it.
Conservative Idaho growth and ultra-liberal Rhode Island losing a Congressional seat and corrupt, broke, high tax Illinois losing more people than any other state. It isn’t just the sunshine in the SW attracting people.
Those of us who live in downstate Illinois should not be compared with those who live (and vote) in Cook, DuPage and Sangamon counties..
With the murder rate in Chicago I am not surprised.
It sounded like Illinois is the fifth largest state in area...I knew it was about population.
