In the spring, during their prime hunting season, polar bears need an insanely large amount of food to stay healthy over 12,000 kilocalories a day, or roughly 6,000 times what humans need, according to new research. Thats a lot more than what scientists previously thought these predators needed to stay healthy. And that means that, as Arctic ice keeps melting because of rising temperatures, polar bears may be in more trouble than we had anticipated.
In April of 2014, 2015, and 2016, researchers tracked nine female polar bears living on the sea ice of the Beaufort Sea, off the northern coast of Alaska, analyzing their blood and urine. The polar bears were also given GPS collars that recorded their movements and took videos of what the bears were doing. All this data showed that polar bears have a higher metabolism than we thought requiring a meal of at least one adult ringed seal, or 19 newborn pups, every 10 to 12 days, according to a study published today in the journal Science. If the bears dont catch this much food, they start to lose weight quickly: four of the bears in the study shed about 44 pounds in just 10 days, losing about 10 percent of their body mass.

where’s the picture of Gobbels?
Humans need 2 cal/day?
Ping.
Hey, i’m savin’ money here. ;-)
2,000, makes sense.
12,000,000 /day means great warmth. You could heat your house with a PB in the basement.

Ah, the old Polar Bear trick.
Not working, libs.
Go back to school.
Try science.
Not MSM science.
Not Democrat science.
But some stuff with numbers in it.
Oh, not University of East Anglia numbers. (They’ve been proven to cheat)
Not NASA numbers. (They alter data AFTER it’s been collected, but forgot to destroy the original numbers.)
I am sure they studied them in the Summer when their fat layer is reducing as it is not as needed.
Yeah, their math is screwy.
12,000 kCals is about twenty pounds of meat (steak is 650 cals per pound.) The author misses the convention of dietetic kilocalories just being called calories, otherwise the poor bears would need to eat about 20 thousand pounds of steak a day.

Yes. This thread will not be complete without the official photograph.

12,000 kilocalories is 12,000 * 1,000 = 12,000,000 calories. That is one very hungry bear.
Thanks, I might be back on path on the units situation.
The 1 calorie that you see on a food label is actually a kilocalorie. 1 calorie raises 1 gram of water by one degree celcius.
Micheal Phelps when in training eats 12,000 calories a day and he has a lot less size than a polar bear.
It’d be better than having a Mr. Fusion...
***If the eco wankers REALLY cared, they’d offer themselves up to save these poor creatures***
I agree. I remember the old movie THE SAVAGE INNOCENTS in which the old Eskimo woman is left behind on the ice to become polar bear food and she is happy as she knows her son will later kill the bear and use it to feed his family.
There should be an excess of seals since clubbing seals went out of style.
6,000 x is a Yugely big deal.
I think it would take TWO polar bears to match the energy put out by a 80k BTU furnace.
