Rick Scott rejects Trump’s pitch to arm teachers

WASHINGTON – Florida Gov. Rick Scott Sunday rejected a plan pitched by President Trump to arm certain teachers with guns as a solution to stop mass shootings.

“I disagree with him,” Scott, a Republican, told Fox News Sunday. “I believe you’ve got to focus on the people that are well-trained in law enforcement, that are trained to do this. I want to make sure we have significant law enforcement presence (at schools) on top of hardening the schools with metal detectors and bullet proof glass, better perimeter fencing.”

“I want our teachers to teach and our law enforcement officers to be able to protect the students. I want each group to focus on what they are good at.”

He went deer-in-the-headlights not once but twice. Weak.

The big flaw with arming teachers is that you’re tasking liberals that wouldn’t own a gun if they were provided a free gun safe, paid a bonus, and given all-you-can-eat arugula and hummus. You’ll have better luck getting Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates to polish their own floors.

We saw what the trained law enforcement did. They hid outside.

Scott has never struck me as terribly bright.

The best thing he’s done during his terms as Florida governor is not doing much of anything.

Too funny - could read:

Scott doesn't think regular citizens are capable of providing defense for our kids - thinks we should defer to the professionals who keep allowing the slaughter of innocents...

Wonder if he really thinks that or if he is posturing for what he thinks Floridian voters want to hear...

It’s not about arming teachers. It’s about allowing those teachers who are qualified, and want to, to be armed.
Words have meanings.

You mean like that rim piece sheriff, the School Recusal Officer and the bench warmers out in the parking lot? Those “well trained in law enforcement”?

Too bad, I had high hopes for Scott. Tell the coaches’s family you don’t believe he should have been armed and was much preferable for him to be a bullet stop covering some kids.

I believe you’ve got to focus on the people that are well-trained in law enforcement, that are trained to do this.

There is at least one school district in Texas that has a few teachers at each school who train with the local PD and State Troopers. The teachers are licensed, armed, and trained to be first responders. Doesn't seem to bother their teaching at all and parents say they sleep well at night.

You just described most politicians. Prez. Obozo would’ve been a much better president if he’d sat in his office, drank coffee, and played Solitaire for 8 years.

New slogan for Scott: Keep our schools gun-free and target-rich!

At my work, they’ve trained everybody in an active-shooter situation to hide under their desks and wait to be shot. It changed from a couple of years ago when everybody was trained to herd into the conference room, shut off the lights, and wait for the place to be turned into a slaughterhouse. The supervisors are supposed to station themselves at each exit to prevent people from leaving. BS. First off, I’m getting out. From there, I trust escape and evasion tactics a lot more than sitting there waiting to be shot. On my way out, if my boss puts himself between me and door, I’ll point over his shoulder and say, “Whoa, who is that?!” When he turns to look, he’ll be off-balance and I’ll push right through him. With my adrenaline going, he won’t stop me.

If I feel that I can’t get to an exit door safely, a chair is going through the large window right next to my cubicle and it’s a 6-foot jump down to the parking lot. From there, I’d rather play Frogger than get under my desk and wait to be shot. They can fire my ass, it’s not worth my life.

This may be a way to rid ourselves of some liberal teachers. Make it a quota system, 20 percent of all teachers must be willing to carry. Hire teachers who are willing to carry if the standard is not met.

In Texas, Colorado, and Missouri, at least some of the school districts have armed teachers.

Rural districts where the local law enforcement probably know all the teachers by sight. Had there been armed teachers in Florida and had the police actually gone in the building during the shooting I would wager half the teachers would have been shot by mistake.

The teachers would not have to be fully-trained LEOs — no where near it. They would mainly be a deterrance — or, failing that, they would be reacting defensively to a situation in familiar surroundings. They would likely train for different scenarios.

Reservists are routinely sent to foreign wars; where they might face a far worse enemy. Enough teachers should be able to qualify to bear arms.

Psychopaths respond to fear.

If they are afraid, they stay away.

Sorry Rickey, you’re just WRONG!

If you have an active shooter inside a school, you want a trained KILLER (see: SEAL or Recon Marine) not a trained law enforcement guy who could be distracted by a tray of doughnuts on his way to respond.

Law enforcement can mop up the shooter’s guts and collect spent brass for evidence.

Hire armed ex-military for your teaching staff. Get security AND discipline as a bonus.

After 9/11, I sent up a suggestion that armed National Guard Officers be put on commercial flights. They would receive some aircraft specific weapons training.

The response?

They wanted to hire more federal civilian employees.

They didn’t care about our security.

They just wanted to hire Democrats for more campaign money and votes.
