Responding to Vox’s: “America’s unique gun violence problem, explained in 17 maps and charts”

An article at Vox has gained attention for illustrating America’s “unique gun violence problem” in 17 maps and charts. Below, we will respond to the individual graphs below on Vox’s terms. But there are a lot of assumptions behind Vox’s graphs. Often, just one or two public health studies are cited to make a particular point, without discussing any of the known weaknesses with these studies. It would also be valuable for Vox to acknowledge and critique research that reaches the opposite conclusions.

Economists focus on the notion of substitution. If you take away guns, people might commit suicides or murders in other ways. It is total deaths that need to concern everyone. Vox focuses exclusively on gun deaths without looking at the larger picture.

There are many countries that have higher gun homicide rates than the United States, but simply don’t report firearm homicide data. Many of these meet the criteria to be members of the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). While 192 countries report total homicides, only 116 countries report firearm homicides. The average homicide rate among countries that don’t have firearm homicide data is 11.1 per 100,000.

Homicide is not synonymous with murder. Homicides count both murders and justifiable homicides (when a police officer or a civilian kills someone in self-defense). In the five years from 2011 to 2015, the US experienced 11,577 firearm homicides and 8,786.4 firearm murders. This gap is much larger in the US than in other countries, so comparing homicide rates gives a more unfavorable impression of the US than if we looked only at murder rates......

Vox is a far-left propaganda outfit that mascarades as a news source.

Founded by the same guy as the far left "Daily Kos", Markos Moulitsas. Unfortunately, they are growing very quickly and know how to manipulate the big search engines to ensure they get plenty of high placement. Like the Huffington Post, a lot of clueless people get their news from Vox and think they are legit.

Vox is also taking over a lot of sports related news and discussion outlets and pushes their leftist/SJW BS on those sites too. Vox is the enemy.

well, what the chart of the US tells us is:
liberals are not responsible enough or psychologically mature enough to own guns,
whereas conservative areas appear to be very responsible and mature when it comes to owning guns.
Solution: ban liberals from owning guns

What's interesting is that Vox's main news site has NO comment section, which is not true of The Verge and SB Nation. I wonder why....

From Vox: Among developed nations, the US is far and away the most homicidal

Why the focus on 'developed nations'? Do 'non-developed' nations have higher or lower homicide rates?

Of the homicide rates for the US, what is the breakdown by race, ethnicity, legal and illegal status?

Well; BEFORE ya get born; there is about a 25% chance a future American will die by CHOICE: a collusion between serial killers and heartless 'mothers'.

CHOICE is THE biggest cause of death in America: 1 in 4

There just might be some kind of karma taking place; doncha think??

Sow the wind; reap the whirlwind type of effect??

This is BS posing as fake news, is just another example of where our 4th Estate is.

The Fourth Estate (or fourth power) is a segment of society that wields an indirect but significant influence on society even though it is not a formally recognized part of the political system. The most commonly recognized part of the fourth estate is the news media, or press.
