US forces have deployed the “Doomsday Plane” amid fears of war with Russia as tensions look ready to snap over Syria.
Just after US President Donald Trump told Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to “get ready” for a missile strike the feared aircraft took to the sky.
US forces put a Boeing E-4B Nightwatch plane into the air from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Indiana.
The Nightwatch – also known as the Doomsday Plane – is an airborne nuclear war command centre.
It would allow the US to maintain a chain of command in the event of a major war and is mobile communications hub.
Pentagon officials declined to give any information about the flight which came amid fears of an imminent World War 3.
The Doomsday Plane is one of 10 emergency airborne command posts which can be deployed in the outbreak of war.
President Trump, along with his top generals and secretary of defence, would be expected to be board the plane during a conflict.
US forces keep the planes on round-the-clock alert should the world plunge into a nuclear war.
The planes are summoned into action by a klaxon, and one is always kept within range of the US President’s location – even when he is outside the US.
Pentagon officials declined to comment on the deployment of the plane when speaking to Russian TV, saying the US carries out "numerous missions every day".

The E-4B “Nightwatch” fleet is based at Offut AFB, Nebraska, where one aircraft/crew is on alert at all times. However, the platforms deploy, sometimes to transport the SecDef overseas. On other occasions, they deploy to US bases overseas while the President is traveling abroad. If the balloon goes up during the trip, POTUS would be taken to the E-4B, not the VC-25, better known by its “Air Force One” callsign when President is onboard.
E-4B’s also deploy apart from POTUS or SecDef travels, for crew training. Wright-Pat is one of their frequent stops, along with Andrews, Fairchild AFB, Washington and other locations. When I was a civilian at Wright-Pat, it wasn’t unusual to see Nighwatch sitting on the ramp, with the crew pulling alert from their deployed location.
A lot of armchair strategists got excited when the E-4 launched from Wright-Pat on Wednesday morning. As I recall, Wednesday is changeout day for the alert crew and support personnel. Departing from Ohio in the morning would give them plenty of time to return to Offut and handover alert duties to the on-coming crew at midday.
Nothing at all unusual about this activity. As I posted elsewhere, the time to get excited about the E-4 is when you see it rushing to a base and Air Force One or Marine One (with POTUS onboard) heading to the same location in a similar hurry. That would signal a pending transfer of president and similar staff from the VC-35 to the E-4. Never been rehearsed with POTUS onboard (to my knowledge), so if that scenario unfolded, there’s a good change that massive quantities of brown excrement would soon hit the old rotary, air-moving device.
Its a BS Story. The E4Bs have been flying since the days OF SAC. Since Ronald Reagan. there are 4 of them set up as flying command posts out of Offiut AFB Neb. originally designed to run Strategic Assets in the event of world war. They have been around for so long there is a Facebook page called Strategic Air Command with stories of the E4’s from years gone by a long time ago...

The E-4B is based out of Offutt AFB, Nebraska and Depot level maintenance is done out of Tinker AFB, Oklahoma.

This is one story I might say could be a misinterpretation. The airborne command posts have been around for a lot longer than the public knows about, or researches. Looking Glass was a creation and responsibility of SAC and the first of them flew during the Kennedy administration in 1961.
But, to play the devil’s advocate, it is possible that someone saw one take off from somewhere, since they don’t know where Wright Pat is, and assumes it was a directed order to get airborne. Like you mentioned, they fly anyway and are normally air refueled from a KC 135 somewhere. But they don’t jettison “shift” change. Or they could be lying to try to create unrest but NPG is mixed on their entries. Who knows.

The good thing to know is that you weren’t too close to a fatal dosage. A single dose enough to kill you in about a month is around 5000 rads. But as you can attest to, the sickness is so bad that you might pray for death to come and get you. I was DP while in the business and the equivalent of a 35L as a civilian. I worked around it for years, but I was careful about medical x-rays and direct contact while working. Didn’t want to get sick. Always had the dosimeter and I peeked.
