Jane Fonda admits she was ‘thoughtless’ in Vietnam

Jane Fonda admits she was ‘thoughtless’ in Vietnam By Danielle Turchiano, Variety 3-4 minutes

Jane Fonda has had a five-decade-plus career as an actress, but prior to getting involved in anti-war activism after the Vietnam War, Fonda says her life was “eventful,” but not as meaningful.

“I was a kind of pretty girl who made movies,” Fonda said at the Television Critics Association panel for her upcoming HBO documentary, “Jane Fonda in Five Acts.” “When I decided to throw in my lot with the anti-war movement, everything shifted. Everything. The way I looked at the world and other people, people I was drawn to. … Everything changed.”

At the time, Fonda recalled, she met some American soldiers in Paris, who told her what they had seen and done in the war. Prior to that experience, she admitted she had been “completely uninvolved” in anything political and “didn’t even know where Vietnam was.” She had also believed that if there were men fighting, they were “on the side of the angels.”

“I didn’t like it that there were men in France that knew better than I did,” she said. “The coin shifted. I said, ‘I feel betrayed by this country’s leadership. We’ve been lied to, and I want to do anything I can to expose that.’”

Fonda then became a strong part of the anti-war movement; she was famously photographed sitting on an anti-aircraft gun in 1972, which earned her the nickname “Hanoi Jane.”

Jane Fonda, another one who’s final resting place I will seek, in order to relieve myself of a six-pack of beer! Ole Henry should have always worn a condom. Both of his children turned out to be $hit!

Willful ignorance combined with Sanctimony. She should have spent more time with active duty troops and pilots. I also wonder how she treated Joan Baez after the Cambodian Holocaust.

Sanctimony (self righteousness that creates blind spots) is a major weakness in most leftist activists.

Viet Nam Vets will always hate her; in fact most Vets hate her. It will be what should be printed on her tombstone; here lies Jane Fonda - TRAITOR. May she live the rest of her life in infamy and ignominy.

most of the rest of us grow up. We realize what we know, what we don't know. We develop reason and perspective through experience and education. We are able to separate what is from what we wish to be.
Even that is optimistic, I’m afraid:
The natural disposition is always to believe. It is acquired wisdom and experience only that teach incredulity, and they very seldom teach it enough. The wisest and most cautious of us all frequently gives credit to stories which he himself is afterwards both ashamed and astonished that he could possibly think of believing. - Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759)

IMHO this SECOND apology tour is all about money just as the first one was.

In the 1980s Jane was pushing a series of exercise tapes (13 total). Then the sales went south when people were reminded about her traitorous acts in Vietnam, Jane took the stage to apologize. The sales didn’t improve.

Nor did her movie offers. Wikipedia lists only 7 films during the 1980s. They were so successful that she retired for 15 years.

Now she, at age 80, she trying to get back into films; hence, her second apology tour.

So sorry Jane, but even after 46 years we still remember the pain you inflicted.

“I do not forgive you Jane. Pissing on your grave is still at the top of my bucket list.”

The line for that particular event will be visible from space.

Her mother was... well... troubled, and Canadian.

Didn't the mother commit suicide?

She was 33 years old sitting on an enemy gun turret. I always thought the only reason she wasn’t brought up on treason charges was because Henry Fonda was an American icon and nobody had the heart to do it.

Rummyfan: "Didn't the mother commit suicide?"

Yes, in 1950 a few months after Henry Fonda asked for divorce so he could remarry.
She was... troubled, the marriage was troubled, it ended badly.

I never saw him that way in his movies.

As for Henry Fonda's politics, he was a Democrat, admired FDR as did Ronald Reagan and supported his fellow Navy officer JFK for president in 1960.
Today some people say Kennedy would be a Republican.
I've seen nothing to suggest Henry was as radical as his daughter Jane.
And didn't at least one of Reagan's children go off the deep end too?

..it happens.
