Report: Russian Hackers Appear to Eye US Power Grids, Not Elections

State-sponsored Russian hackers appear to have a greater interest in the U.S. power grid than meddling in the fall midterm elections since reports indicate that so far only two Senate Democrats up for re-election had online accounts tampered with, The New York Times reported Friday.

There's little evidence of Russian military hackers in U.S. elections or state election systems, U.S. intelligence officials and representatives from technology companies maintain, but report there has been quite a lot of evidence pointing to foreign agents implanting malware on electric grids across the country.

The Department of Homeland Security revealed this week Russia's military intelligence agency had infiltrated power plant control rooms across the U.S., citing "hundreds of victims." However, there is no indication any efforts were made to actually disrupt U.S. power systems.

It appears hackers gained access through a network of power plant contractors, perhaps for the sole purpose of showing that they could succeed. The White House has said little about the claims, according to the Times, except to stress the administration's efforts to provide cyber security to state and local elections systems.

We have established they are meddling in everything from power grids to North Korean fuel trade to Nicaraguan riots. They are "saving" Syria by propping Assad. And arming the Taliban against ISIS because they want to save Afghanistan too. 😴

They are either oblivious to, or don’t care about this issue.

If Russia wanted this access in the event of a future war, I could understand this, but why would the damage or screw with our grid now?

I’ve told that to people in companies before.

They look at me like I just stepped off a spaceship.

IMHO, the Ruskies are just fooling around, testing, poking, probing, seeing what they can get away with.

Taking down just a small portion of our extremely vulnerable power grid will be devastating. Powers that be have known this for years but have done nothing much about it.

Lots of reading material on this. “One Second After” is a good one.

Try turning off the power to your house and turning off all the electronic devices (phones, etc.) for a weekend. It’ll be a real eye opener.

The sad thing is, if the Dems really cared about people, they would be voting to take measures to mitigate an attack on the grid, not trying to prove Trump “colluded” with the Russkis.

Is that what happened to the power grid in CA?

Oh, that right, that’s totally mismanaged by the idiots running CA. Don’t do anything to increase power generation, just charge more dollars each year.

We do it all the time. It’s our cabin in the mountains with no services. Just a solar cell 12v system and what we store there. Jigsaw puzzles and card games by kerosene lantern. And Yahtzee. It gets more fun after each beer. We store a lot of that too.

We are ready. (Hic)

Trump is the one reversing America’s course and Russia’s meddling is casting shadow and providing fodder for liberals.

Enough of it for liberals to use/capitalize to sabotage President Trump. Which is just how Russia wanted it. Didn’t matter who was in office.
