Because otherwise they’d be too bad a loan to ever underwrite. Without that provision, only the government could offer them in what really would be a massive, forced, redistributive funds transfer.

I believe that encouraging 18-year olds to bury themselves in student loan debt for a degree that won't even get them a job should be a capital offense.

It wasn't 18-year olds who raised the cost of a college education to a price comparable to buying a new house and then made even the most menial job require a degree. It were their Baby Boomer parents and "Greatest Generation" grandparents who oversaw these policies.

Spent 5 years in college, graduated with a BS Physics & business, worked summers and Christmas vacations, and in the kitchens of the girls dorm for .65$/ hour(would have worked there for free!). Frat rat too. graduated with no debt.

How much was a semester of college back then?

Yeah.. I did, I took my own loans out and paid them off. I had a full time job, married and 2 kids and went to college and got an engineering degree at a reasonable local college that taught only the requirements needed and not the liberal snowflake crap that’s rampant now a days.

Student loans are the ONLY kind of debt you cannot escape through bankruptcy.

You are in error here. The following debts cannot be cleared by bankruptcy without consent of the judge.
Credit card debt
Medical bills (Studies show that about 62 percent of bankruptcies are linked to medical debt)
Overdue bills turned over to collection agencies
Personal loans (Student Loan Debt)
Utility bills
Business debts
Unpaid/overdue taxes.

Those liberal social degrees really go a long way. The minor in 12th. century Tibetan Poetry helps too.

Perhaps we should force the colleges to absorb some of this student dept since they are the ones who profited

Does anyone ever pay off their student loans?

Um, I did.

Want to know why? Because, they wouldn’t get paid back, that’s why. Before the legislation changed things, law students specialised in getting their degrees and declaring bankruptcy. They had courses instructing them how to do so.

Modern education is a racket, to be sure. While the news article informs us as to the color of her kayak it would be more interesting to know what she majored in. Very, very sad.Hopefully “Big Education” will collapse and soon.
Like most things, once government gets involved it turns to shit.

I never did. The lenders accepted a small sum just to close that account. I cannot imagine becoming so overwrought about a pass due student loan while still in my 20’s.
Poor girl. There had to be other issues as well. Maybe she suffered from depression. I have never heard of committing suicide in that manner by anyone. The Family must be devastated.

While I generally agree with you, You are over-generalizing. I know lots of young people with degrees in music, English, literature, geography, history, and other liberal arts degrees who all have good careers started. Businesses look for well rounded people who are capable of learning. I know a fair number of execs who started in those tracks, too. Your career choices are NOT limited to teaching other students those disciplines. Our oldest daughter got a masters degree in Human Geography and is an excellent and well-paid market analyst in the hospitality, tourism, and airline industries. Her ability to analyze data and write cogent reports all come from her liberal arts training. A lot depends on your drive, enthusiasm and ability to navigate career choices.

When I graduated in 1970, in-state tuition (at U. of Wisconsin-Madison) was $500 per year.

I went to a Jr. College..got my AS..and a credential. Paid for it myself.

That was long time ago....It's been a good career.

My youngest daughter did the same.....No debt. Well...we did pay some for it. And we are part Native...and they paid some.

Her husband though is saddled with debt...although he about to do his Fellowship..and then join a practice...He will have not problems paying off his debt.

Have to pick the right path.....Not a lot of Master's in Dance.....job's out there.
