I promise I won't get weepy. I'm philosophical.

In 1969 I met her as she was on her way to her first disastrous marriage -- to the druggie. That marriage caused her to live on the fringes of society until she bailed after five years. He died some years later from an OD.

In 2013 I caught her between her second and third marriages. It was wonderful to see her again, but she didn't really remember me from 1969, perhaps due to her drug induced haze of those years. She's still a hippie, half a century after it ceased to be fashionable. She's now married to the guy with the Ph.D. in transcendental meditation and entertains crowds of social justice warriors with her electric violin. Perhaps we will meet again, but on the opposing sides of barricades.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

“BY THE RIVER SAINTE MARIE”

Although it dates from the mid 1950s when the Platters were the slow-dancing group of the day, their producer Buck Ram could get them to rock when necessary.

(HUG RETURNED)

What caught my attention in "Jealous" was the effective use of silence at the beginning. It's quite moving. Schubert was a real pro at that. (Example: second movement of his Ninth Symphony.)

The other thing that caught me was the way he avoided a direct D Major cadence by coloring it with B minor. That's a brilliant way of mixing words and music. Another thing that Schubert could do brilliantly.

This song played a part in the funeral of the mother of a friend of mine. In her final years at a retirement village she had been a member of a ladies chorus who started each rehearsal with "Let Me Call You Sweetheart."

The family wanted this sung at her funeral, but the pastor of the Catholic parish nixed it because it wasn't "liturgical." One of the three sons of the deceased was a priest at a monastery. He spoke to his abbot, who apparently had a rank equivalent to a bishop. The abbot called the bishop, who called the pastor, who changed his mind on the spot. The monastery had a choir, and at the funeral, the choir sang "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" in eight-part harmony when her coffin was brought in. My friends' wife said there wasn't a dry eye in the church.
