Talk about an understatement.

The central valley is well on its way to becoming a third world country. The rest of the state will not be more than one generation behind.

Some areas will remain insulated by geographical boundaries, but they will become isolated pockets of wealth and virtual traps to those who remain. We were sensing the demographic change, degradation of property and gang growth when we left Monterey County in 2002. One trip back there in 2008 was shocking to see how rapid the down slide was gaining momentum.
