You’re right, I don’t call him a fascist. He’s certainly anti-democratic, and I say so in the book, but I don’t call him a fascist because he isn’t violent. If he ends up declaring an emergency at the border over immigration, then I might change my position. There’s a long history of fascists using “emergencies” to create fear and conflict, so that’s a potential red line. If Trump does that, then he really is a bully with an army.
But I do think his approach to the free press, to democratic institutions, to the independent judiciary, is extremely dangerous and anti-democratic. And his general disdain for the rule of law is genuinely alarming. Sean Illing
I have to push back here, because I think you’re wrong on the point about violence. In addition to denouncing the free press, in addition to threatening to jail political opponents, in addition to undermining rule of law, Trump has actually incited political violence at his rallies, and he’s created an atmosphere in which violence is far more likely.
It seems to me he’s checked nearly all the fascist boxes.

I find rather ironic, amusing and maddening that folks on the left who think Trump is a fascist or has Fascistic tendencies, show no trepidation expressing those thoughts. That only proves how wrong they are. If Trump was truly what they say he is, they wouldn’t be on the public airwaves calling him one.
It's really as simple as that. William F. Buckley suggested long ago that the proper answer to accusations of being a fascist is: "All the Communists call me that." :)

This”how to recognize a fascist” game is idiotic. Notice they never include having a wing of Stormtroopers breaking out windows and attacking people in the street? They never include vegan non-smokers? The number include homosexuality and sexual perversion which was widespread in nazi culture. They never seem to mention passionate hatred for the Jews. (As found in the Democrat revolutionary circles) This of course, is because that describes them.
They are engaging in what Richard Feynman called cargo cult science. They come at it backwards, looking at Nazis, and then making a checklist of things Nazis did. And to them them, that’s what a Nazi is. Better to start with their philosophy beginning with Mussolini and evaluate.
