Pelosi says she backs lowering voting age to 16

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) voiced her support on Thursday for lowering the federal voting age to 16, telling reporters during a press conference that doing so would be a boon to voter engagement in the U.S.

Pelosi said Thursday that lowering the voting age would drive interest in politics among younger Americans who are learning about the subject in high school. The Speaker said that changing the voting age to 16 would help drive a higher level of voter awareness and turnout.

"I myself have always been for lowering the voting age to 16," Pelosi said. "I think it's really important to capture kids when they're in high school, when they're interested in all of this, when they're learning about government, to be able to vote."

Pelosi's comments Thursday echoed those she has made previously, including in a 2015 New York Times interview in which the Speaker said she was "all for" lowering the voting age.

Pelosi told the Times that she wanted to expand voter access to 16 and 17-year-olds “because when kids are in school, they’re so interested, they’re so engaged.”

The California congresswoman supported a local ballot initiative in her home district of San Francisco in 2016 that would have lowered the voting age in municipal elections to 16, known as Proposition F, but the measure was defeated by single digits at the ballot box.

Members of Congress voted down an amendment to the Democrats' voting rights bill last Thursday that sought to lower the federal voting age to 16, an effort led by freshman Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.). Almost 130 lawmakers voted in favor of the amendment, which was described by advocates as a first of its kind proposal to make it to the...

Excellent points. Not something the dems have thought about, because they don’t go beyond the knee-jerk stage.

Children shouldn’t vote because they are still in the fantasy stage iif life, with the liberal teachers brainwashing them about socialist utopias. It’s only when one us working, paying taxes, trying to make ends meet while watching others get free handouts that reality sets in.

“I adhere to the constitution. The founders were brilliant in thought and their ideals. The constitution was true and right in that only land owners should vote”

I wish we could go back to that. Someone without a stake in the game is not going to vote correctly, they will vote themselves other people’s money. And there goes the Country.

It’s apparent that their attempts to get college age millenials to vote hasn’t worked. So this is Plan C (Plan B is ‘make illegals citizens’.

These dim socialists have all lost their minds. Or they have become so devious that they are showing their true selves.

Sixteen is a child. They're cognitive abilities are not fully developed. They have zero life experience; have no understanding of the intricacies of politics; no idea about macro-economics; and will only follow what their teachers say.

Personally, I believe the voting age should be RAISED to 25, military excluded.

I wish we could go back to that. Someone without a stake in the game is not going to vote correctly, they will vote themselves other people’s money. And there goes the Country.

The following quotation has been attributed to Tytler, although it has also been occasionally attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville:

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

I fully agree. Though the exception for the military would probably set up a false, but convenient, "equal protection" argument in courts for many years.

I'd settle for 21 across the board. At least most people who've attained that age will likely have some real-world working experience to know how economics and handling money feels first hand.

She and her fellow Democrats might be a bunch of socialist loony-tunes but they do know how to fight. They are merciless and there is no "reaching across the aisle."

Too many Republicans are still fighting by "Marquess of Queensberry" rules and they are getting clobbered. When a real street fighter like Trump comes along to fight on their behalf, they don't even seem to appreciate it.

"Pelosi said. "I think it's really important to capture kids when they're in high school, when they're interested in all of this, when they're learning about government, to be able to vote."

First, notice the word "capture". Secondly, HS kids have no interest in politics - they live for their social media on their devices. Third, they are no longer learning about "government" (civics classes).

If this came to pass, we would be Venezuela, Cuba, or the Soviet Union within a short time. Could even become the Western hemisphere equivalent of Zimbabwe. Bad enough our college students are learning socialism, we need our HS kids to learn earlier?

Half of the children 18 and under are minorities as classified by the USG. Each cohort that turns 18 annually is more minority than the previous one. Minorities vote more than two to one for the Dems. Is it any wonder the Dems want to lower the voting age to 16?

And our schools are Dem indoctrination centers. Demography is destiny.

Anyone notice that this pretty much corresponds to Democrats’ push to lower the age of (sexual) consent?

“If they can vote, they can have sex.”

If anything, we should be talking about raising the voting age, not lowering it. As far as I'm concerned, the voting age ought to be raised to 21 or even 25, making an exception for military personnel at 18.

There's a good reason why everyone's auto insurance payments drop significantly after age 25: that's about the age where sound judgment rather than impulse starts to rule your life. Naturally, impulse-based thought patterns are exactly the ones most receptive to the promises of "free stuff" and grievance claims that the Left likes to peddle.

No. Legal immigration will make the Dems the permanent majority party within a decade. Since 1990 we have brought in 35 million legal permanent immigrants and that doesn’t include the 300,000 anchor babies born annually to illegal aliens. 87% of legal immigrants are minorities.

What further proof do you need that AOC, Omar and the Young Radicals have won the battle. This is Nancy raising a white flag.

The Democrat Party: “You don’t have to be a child to vote Democrat - but it helps.”
The wisest and most cautious of us all frequently gives credit to stories which he himself is afterwards both ashamed and astonished that he could possibly think of believing . . . It is acquired wisdom and experience only that teach incredulity, and they very seldom teach it enough.

If you are old enough to vote, and to enlist in the military, you are old enough to drink, smoke, enter contacts, and have reached the age of sexual consent....etc
