Maine Senate passes bill giving state's electoral votes to national popular vote winner

Maine's lawmakers passed a bill that would give the state's electoral votes to the presidential candidate who won the national popular vote, taking a step toward becoming the 15th state to enact such a law. The Maine Senate voted 19-16 Tuesday to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would give all committed states' electoral votes to the winning popular vote candidate should the group accrue the 270 votes necessary for a majority.

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington state and the District of Columbia have all committed to the pact. The most recent addition, New Mexico, put the total at 189 electoral votes.

California. Texas. Florida.
That’s the popular vote. And what do they all have in common? The most Hispanics. They’ll be the ones deciding who is president for us.

This needs to be smacked down now. it’s unconstitutional. The day after a close election is not the time to fight this.

+.... which would give all committed states’ electoral votes to the winning popular vote candidate should the group accrue the 270 votes necessary for a majority. “

I am unclear on the language in the case where like 2016 the winning candidate accrued more than the 270 electoral votes to win but did not win the majority popular vote as it seems to give the state’s electoral votes to the popular vote winning candidate only if he had 270 majority. Am I interpreting it wrong? electoral votes to win which Clinton did not have? What is “the group”?

Compacts such as this between states are unconstitutional.

Serious legal hurdles precede this ever coming to fruition eventually likely to be struck down by SCOTUS.

If they want to change it, let's go by number of counties.

Hard to believe elected officials are that stupid.

The very propose of the electoral college was to make it possible for a little state like Maine to have their say in presidential elections.

Now they are nothing. NY, CA, IL etc., will determine who will be president.

Like they say, you can’t fix stupid.

“These laws are unconstitutional,...”

They are also extremely dangerous...democrats wouldn’t be passing them unless they thought it would redound to their favor.

“What would no longer count - electorally speaking - is Maine as a state.”

That’s right. The founders had great respect for the roles of states as separate important entities and they went to great lengths to ensure states rights, after all it was states that originally created the federal government not the other way around.

Maine is not a “deep blue state.”

The First Congressional District, 20% of the state, includes the liberal Portland area. It’s in the southeast corner of the state, close to Massachusetts, and IS deep blue.

The Second Congressional District, which covers 80% of Maine, is 27,000 square miles which makes this district the largest in area east of the Mississippi River. It’s mostly rural, pro-Second Amendment country.

The second CD is more conservative. Candidate Trump carried this district by 10 points, earning him one electoral vote. (Maine apportions it’s electoral votes by district). Madame Hillary won the first CD for one electoral vote. She also carried the statewide vote by 2.9% (the first district is more heavily populated and that’s why). She won two more electoral votes by winning the statewide vote.

Hillary also ran a lot more ads than candidate Donald Trump.

If this national popular vote crap becomes a reality in 2020, the people of the more conservative second district will be dis-enfranchised.

There was a blue wave in many areas of the country last November and, unfortunately, Maine was one of those areas.
Our great conservative governor Paul LePage was term-limited, and now we have Janet Mills, the 70+ year old former dem liberal attorney general.

The national popular vote BS only kicks in if states representing 270 electoral votes kick in. They won’t reach that number by November 2020, and the U.S. Supreme Court will ultimately have to weigh in.

Democrats are stupid.... They honestly think that they will always win the popular vote...

Like I said, these same D’s will be screaming and filing lawsuits/rescinding these laws the minute Trump (or some other R) wins the popular vote.

The U.S. Constitution allows each state to determine the method by which its electors are chosen. Therefore, if a state such as Maine were to seriously desire to become irrelevant, it could decide to apportion its electors according to the U.S. popular vote. Why someone would want to publicly tell the world they really don’t care what happens, or that its population is too stupid to make decisions, is another question.

I think it means this: As soon as states totaling 270 electoral votes agree to the Compact, then the Compact goes into effect. I don’t think that the “270” has anything to do with an actual election.

Of course I could be wrong. I was thrown out of law school for wearing a MAGA hat.

“”Democrats are stupid.... They honestly think that they will always win the popular vote...””

Yep stupid but if you have been paying attention, they almost always in the end are wrong. My guess is Trump will win the popular vote in 2020. Grab some popcorn...

The movement can violate the voter’s rights in the state. Assume Maine’s or Colorado, or any of the other states in this movement vote for Candidate A, but Candidate B gets the popular vote, the decision of the state’s voters is ignored.

Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen, and should be filed ASAP as a violation of voting rights.
