Good evening, Janey...((HUGS))...stay inside. It’s hot in Phoenix!

And it’s horribly hot here, too. Only relief is fans. Lots of really bad fires, too.

Have great flights!!

Stuart Hamblen issues a warning to those who would mess with the flag, be they the Alger Hisses of his day or the Colin Kaepernicks of our own.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

OUT OF THIS WORLD

This 1944 Paramount musical starred Eddie Bracken and Veronica Lake, and was a satire on the whole bobby-soxer fad. Harold and Johnny Mercer contributed a few tunes for this show, along with a number of other songwriters.

”JUNE COMES AROUND EVERY YEAR”

This is what it looked like in the movie. That’s Eddie Bracken lip-synching to Bing Crosby’s voice.

The Voice of Free America--Jimmie Osborne (1951)

Like the voice of free America, I am pleading now with you,
Let's all shout the words of freedom throughout Europe and Asia, too.
There is no place like our nation, it is led by God's own hand.
Let's defeat the oppressor and bring peace to every land.

Oh, the voice of free America, it beams throughout the world,
Tells the honest way of life to man and woman, boy and girl.
Let's thank God for all our freedoms, he's been good to you and me,
Let's unite the willing nations and keep the whole world free.

In Iran, they're having trouble over oil, so we do hear.
Between Britain and Iran, the Russians interfere.
On the other side, Korea is a sea of blood today.
Send the voice of free America and get on your knees and pray.

Oh, the voice of free America, it beams throughout the world,
Tells the honest way of life to man and woman, boy and girl.
Let's thank God for all our freedoms, he's been good to you and me,
Let's unite the willing nations and keep the whole world free.

Sometimes I wonder what will happen if we go on at this pace.
I feel sure there's just one answer: there will be no human race.
The atom bomb will cause destruction; we can stop this with our prayers.
Send the voice of free America to all nations everywhere.

Oh, the voice of free America, it beams throughout the world,
Tells the honest way of life to man and woman, boy and girl.
Let's thank God for all our freedoms, he's been good to you and me,
Let's unite the willing nations and keep the whole world free.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

OUT OF THIS WORLD: ”JUNE COMES AROUND EVERY YEAR”

Joannie is best known for her singing in a 1960s Pepsi commercial, “For those who think young.” Catch the harpsichord in the arrangement. This is from 1963.

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...record high here yesterday and fires rage.

Thinking of getting a kiddy pool for the feet out on the deck.

You and Penny tried out your new hiking boots?

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

ST. LOUIS WOMAN

Harold and Johnny Mercer’s next project was a Broadway musical, “St. Louis Woman.” The show opened in 1946 but was not well received. Ironically, over time it has been rated as their masterpiece. After only 113 performances, the show closed, and Harold and Johnny returned to California.

”COME RAIN OR COME SHINE”

This classic tune came out of a single evening’s work in October 1945. Johnny had come over to Arlen’s house and remained in the study while Harold went into the living room and “toyed around with an idea.” When Harold played the tune for Johnny, he liked it and even came up with a fitting opening line, “I’m gonna love you like nobody’s loved you,” after which he paused for a moment. Into the brief silence Arlen jokingly injected, “Come hell or high water,” to which Mercer reacted by saying, “Of course, why didn’t I think of that – ‘Come rain or come shine.’” (You couldn’t say “hell” on the radio.) Before Johnny went home that night, the song was complete.

This is early Sassy from 1950. This is a small club take on the song.

Sarah Vaughan: “Come Rain or Come Shine”

Practicing What We Preach

Bible in a Year : Job 30–31; Acts 13:26–52

Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. 1 John 2:9 Pastor and writer Eugene Peterson had the opportunity to hear a lecture by Swiss physician and highly respected pastoral counselor Paul Tournier. Peterson had read the doctor’s works, and admired his approach to healing. The lecture left a deep impression on Peterson. As he listened, he had the feeling that Tournier lived what he spoke and spoke what he lived. Peterson chose this word to describe his experience: “Congruence. It is the best word I can come up with.”

Congruence—it’s what some refer to as “practicing what you preach” or “walking your talk.” The apostle John stresses that if any of us “claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister,” then we’re “still in the darkness” (1 John 2:9). In essence, our lives and our words simply don’t match up. John goes further to say such people “do not know where they are going” (v. 11). The word he chose to describe how incongruence leaves us? Blind.

Living closely aligned to God by allowing the light of His Word to illuminate our paths keeps us from living blind. The result is a godly vision that gives clarity and focus to our days—our words and actions match up. When others observe this, the impression is not necessarily that of someone who knows everywhere they’re going, but of someone who clearly knows who they’re following.

By John Blase

Reflect & Pray

In what ways does the word congruence describe you? How can you grow to live a more consistent life?

Jesus, I want my words and actions to match up. There are times I fall short, but my desire is to grow more consistent each day. Help me, please, so that everyone listening and watching my life will be drawn to You.
