Tesla’s Elon Musk says he’ll leave California due to coronavirus shutdown. Who cares? (Sacramento Bee editorial)
Sacramento Bee ^ | May 10 2020 | BY THE SACRAMENTO BEE EDITORIAL BOARD

Poor Elon Musk. COVID-19 has killed nearly 2,700 Californians so far, but he’s the one who’s truly suffering during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Tesla founder and billionaire CEO launched a fresh Twitter tantrum on Saturday. He threatened to move his electric car company out of California as a protest against the state’s coronavirus stay-at-home order.

“Frankly, this is the final straw,” wrote Musk on Twitter after health officials in Alameda County declined to let Tesla’s factory re-open this week. “Tesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas/Nevada immediately.”

Musk also insulted Alameda County’s health officer, calling her “unelected & ignorant.”

Unfortunately for Musk, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s statewide stay-at-home order is extremely popular with the vast majority of Californians. And for good reason: Our collective efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 has saved tens of thousands of lives.

Big mistake locating any factory in California.

...

He got a great deal on that factory. It was close to free.

This is true in Sacramento, for sure. There are many tall buildings in Sac, most of which belong to one or another state agency. The people that work in those buildings get paid to "work from home". They haven't lost a cent, and some school employees are getting hazard pay when they actually report to physical work.

I drove by the Bee building a few days ago, and I saw a lot with hundreds of newspaper machines behind a locked gate. They probably lost a lot of money on those, and also from not selling the papers out of them. The Starbucks and Peet's coffee shops, and the supermarket checkout, are the places where you go to get a newspaper now. Al the Starbucks are drive through right now. I wonder how many people are driving up asking for an extra hot soy latte, a ham panninni and a Sacramento Bee?

The crooks in the Fake News industry hate Musk because he doesn’t buy advertising.

Sadly, quite a few FReepers read these stories and hop on the hate bandwagon.

No, BiPAP and CPAP machines were delivered. For being a Scientist, he sure is free and loose with basic terminology.Z

Indeed someone seems to have trouble with nomenclature - look in yer mirror.

Poor Elon Musk. COVID-19 has killed nearly 2,700 Californians so far,

And how many have died from heart disease, cancer etc in that same time period?
And those so called “coronavirus deaths”, are they deaths from coronavirus or WITH coronavirus?

Well Tesla has roughly 20,000 employees in the Bay area, including its headquarters in Palo Alto. So I guess at least 20,000 Californians would care. Of course the Californian Governments would not care about a large number of unemployed, unable to find new jobs at this time, need for food and rent help plus other governmental assistance.

So California Government to Tesla, 'screw you'!

Yet the 20,000 would still vote for Libs!

"And just like that, everyone forgot he never delivered the ventilators he bragged about."

Not only did he not deliver them, they needed assembly. Not only did they need assembly, but they didn't work, not only did they not work, but they weren't technically ventilators. Not sure why people are so anxious to attack Musk on this. He made and delivered something less than a ventialtor, but better than a cpap machine.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/17/tech/elon-musk-ventilators-california/index.html

CNN contacted 10 California hospitals identified by Musk in the partial list of recipients he posted on Thursday. Of the four hospitals that responded, all said they had received bilevel positive airway pressure (biPAP) or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines — devices that can aid breathing and be used for sleep apnea. None had received ventilators. "We received six CPAPs and we are very grateful for the gift," said a spokesperson for Sonoma Valley Hospital.

Mammoth Hospital also said it received 10 bilevel machines from Tesla. "They're not full ventilators but there are lots of people that need breathing assistance," a spokesperson said, calling the donation "very gracious."

Los Angeles County officials said they received from Tesla 100 bilevel units manufactured by the company ResMed in late March. "They have been distributed to hospitals in our system and are being used as intended," said Kathleen Piché, Director of Public Information for L.A. County Department of Health Services. "These units are used for breathing and airway support, reducing the need for certain patients to be placed on mechanical ventilation."

Musk's donation of medical devices to California hospitals mirrors his gift to New York hospitals. In that case, too, he sent biPAPs instead of ventilators, as first reported in the Financial Times.

One of our biggest problems here in Texas is the onslaught of transplants escaping the results of the draconian regulations of other states. Then after they get here they vote in politicians who replace the conditions they escaped to with the conditions they escaped from.

Tesla buyers are idiot leftists. I suspect that the people slated to come here with Tesla will go the same route and further. Teslas are a fake leftist solution to a fake leftist problem. They use more energy, pollute more, and have terrible fuel range.

Keep Tesla in California, or anywhere but Texas.

They could save thousands of lives by banning cars and trucks. Also, might wave the planet. Just do not ask the rest of the country to bail you out.

The ventilators were built to the specifications provided by the Intensive Care Units.

What more could the customer want?

It’s interesting that’s the straw that broke the camel’s back.””

Musk is using the Fremont auto assembly plant originally used by Ford & others.

He cannot go UP nor can he build out to the sides there.

That building is landlocked so to speak.

I have been wondering how long it would take for him to move all of his operations to N Nevada-—where land is available for him to consolidate his car operations.

The batteries are being made in N Nevada...the assembly of the cars is done in California.

The various Governors of Calif have been putting a surcharge on ALL the Tesla shipments from Nevada to Fremont-—as
‘Dangerous Cargo’.

Musk isn’t stupid....he can save alot of hassle by moving everything to N Nevada.

My neighbor works for him here in N Nevada. She says it is the BEST job she has ever had. 12 hours shifts 3 days a week. Less commuting, lower lunch costs, etc. Good work atmosphere overall.

She Received a voucher to purchase steel toed work boots when she was hired. ALL health/medical benefits started the minute SHE started work. Plant has an open attitude about ‘what can be done quicker—cheaper—safer-— and EVERYONE gets to speak up if they wish.

This is the same guy who can build a satellite launcher system that can RETURN TO EARTH & LAND & BE REUSED....

Don’t count Musk out.

I applaud his plan to remove himself from the control of California whims.
