Dr. Anthony Fauci says he would settle for a COVID-19 vaccine thats 70% to 75% effective, but that this incomplete protection, coupled with the fact that many Americans say they wont get a coronavirus vaccine, makes it unlikely that the US will achieve sufficient levels of immunity to quell the outbreak.
With government support, three coronavirus vaccines are expected to be studied in large-scale clinical trials in the next three months.
The best weve ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective, said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. That would be wonderful if we get there. I dont think we will. I would settle for [a] 70, 75% effective vaccine.
A CNN poll last month found one-third of Americans said they would not try to get vaccinated against COVID, even if the vaccine is widely available and low cost.
In an interview Friday, CNN asked Fauci whether a vaccine with 70% to 75% efficacy taken by only two-thirds of the population would provide herd immunity to the coronavirus.
No unlikely, he answered.

That’s the whole point. A vaccine should be for something that you want to avoid. So far, it seems that COVID-19 is proving to be far weaker than H1N1. Would be like buying an insurance policy for a cardboard box.
There are billions, perhaps trillions, to be made on the vaccine even if it doesn’t work...
What has Fauci been right about through any of this?
Tired of Fauci.
Above is just A story they’re telling...
...propaganda narrative in play here is for the sheep to demand and accept mandatory vaccinations. Predictive programming.
Agree.
Heck no!
Ill take my exposure in the form of a vaccine which has been tested for months - safer than simply taking on the virus from some infected cashier at Costco.
Would you like a side of mercury with that?
” ... those that dont will get the virus and will be protected after.”
My main concern about a vaccine is that (at least in some people) it may cause the immune system to overreact, leading to the dreaded “cytokine storm.”
No. "Herd immunity" means enough of the population is immune, so the virus has nowhere to spread. Immunity can be from recovering from a minor case, or from getting a vaccine.
Potentially, yes. Assuming the virus doesn't mutate enough that our bodies can no longer recognize it. So far, it seems to be mutating very slowly, which is good news for us. There's no guarantee of its genetic stability continuing into the future, but so far things look promising. However, if you take the CDC's lower bound Infection Fatality Rate and run that against the total population required to get infected before reaching herd immunity, you come up with ~600,000 - 725,000 dead Americans. That's an incredible price to pay if we don't have to and it's exactly why President Trump has been pushing so hard to get us a vaccine.
"If it mutates, then it can spread more and herd immunity wont matter as much, but then again, the vaccine will not be effective anyway! This is just the same as how the flu vaccine cannot keep up with the flu strains that spread seasonally."
Yes, basically. The goal of the vaccine is to get the body to react and build memory of the pathogen without actually being infected by it. But if the virus changes enough that it isn't recognizable to the immune system, then whether you've had it before or had a vaccine will not matter. So far, this hasn't been a big issue since it seems to be pretty stable, genetically. However, that's certainly a risk. The Influenza vaccine is actually a very helpful tool. However, because it takes months to manufacture and distribute, they have to make educated guesses about which strains will hit various parts of the world based on what's hitting other parts of the world. The flu vaccine is often only 30 or 40% effective. But that's still much better than zero. With the vaccine, Influenza kills an average of 37,000 Americans each year. Without it, you could expect that number to potentially be closer to 57,000 per year. Saving 20,000 American lives each year is still something worth doing and something we should all be thankful we have available.
With a potential SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, if the President is willing to take it, I'm willing to. I know he's pushing for something that's safe and effective, and I trust that he's keeping an eye out for any corner cutting or other problems with it. He has a lot more information about it than any of us ever will and I trust his judgement.
Mutations are non-beneficial, weakening the virus
You won’tget it from a cashier at Costco. They are spraying and wiping everything and wearing masks, so really that is a stupid statement.
Government has proven it can no longer be trusted in any way shape or form. The entire system is politicized and corrupt.
No way I'm taking a vaccine that is being pushed by this clown show.
BOY, I totally agreed.
Steve Bing, who inherited $600 million dollars jumped from his 27 story window in Century City in part because of this lock down.
My doc at Cedars Sinai who I am seeing today says there are huge numbers of people suffering from the effects of the lock down and isolation. I, too, am feeling the effects of isolation ...it is crippling.
I can’t believe they shut down the economy over this!!!!! The whole thing is mind boggling. I had a blast going to the opening of Target yesterday!!!! Yip! Get this city OPEN!
Really? Which genes mutated exactly, and what did those genes control, specifically?
It just goes to show that there will always be something to worry about. Once the cytokine storm doesn't happen in more than one or two individuals, then what? I would be surprised to find out if anyone even knows what a cytokine is, let alone a storm of them. I think I would be worried that driving to get the vaccination makes you vulnerable to traffic accidents. I worry that people with guns who get vaccinated and the localized pain from an injection might make them start shooting other people. There are other even more trivial worries than cytokine storms or random acts of gunfire.
I have a deal for all the anti-vaccers. After a vaccine is available, all treatment for CoronaVirus insurance will have a $1500 deductible which would be waived for anyone with proof of vaccination.
