Dr. Anthony Fauci says he would “settle” for a COVID-19 vaccine that’s 70% to 75% effective, but that this incomplete protection, coupled with the fact that many Americans say they won’t get a coronavirus vaccine, makes it “unlikely” that the US will achieve sufficient levels of immunity to quell the outbreak.
With government support, three coronavirus vaccines are expected to be studied in large-scale clinical trials in the next three months.
“The best we’ve ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective,” said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “That would be wonderful if we get there. I don’t think we will. I would settle for [a] 70, 75% effective vaccine.”
A CNN poll last month found one-third of Americans said they would not try to get vaccinated against COVID, even if the vaccine is widely available and low cost.
In an interview Friday, CNN asked Fauci whether a vaccine with 70% to 75% efficacy taken by only two-thirds of the population would provide herd immunity to the coronavirus.
“No — unlikely,” he answered.

I get my annual flu shot but won't be first in line for a covid vaccine. I wear a mask, required by work, or if I have to go out, and social distance. As an "essential workers" I wouldn't be surprised if I've already had it but I don't know either way.
I'm out and about watching groups of young adults and "Karens" & flubros with no masks or masks as chin straps and all I can think is how willfully reckless they are.

No. In both cases it's "herd immunity," whether the immunity came naturally or by vaccine. This is why anti-vaxxers are so dangerous to school children, for example, because you need both the individual's immune system response and enough people in the population to control the virus because not everyone's immune system responds the same.
That means, for example, if enough kids haven't been vaccinated against measles to reach herd immunity even some vaccinated kids will fall ill.

A) That's a bit overly simplistic. The antibodies aren't typically present for a significant period of time. It's the Memory B-Cells that are truly the long term defense against reinfection.
B) What do you think a vaccine does? It exposes the body to a dead or weakened form of the virus or bacteria, causing an immune response in the body. The very same immune response that would be triggered if it were an encounter with the pathogen in the wild. The same antibodies get made. The same Memory B-Cells get activated. You just don't get sick. And you gain the same immunity. It's a great deal.

No, it is not. Vaccinations are not part of herd immunity.

Herd immunity means the herd gives each other immunity through exposure to the virus, not that the herd has immunity from each getting a vaccination.
Think about it a little further. You don’t need a herd for immunizations.
