A 95-year-old German woman has been charged with being an accessory to the murder of more than 10,000 people at the Stutthof concentration camp in Poland during World War II.

The unidentified woman, who reportedly worked as a secretary and commandant’s aide in the camp for two years, will be tried in juvenile court because she was under 21 at the time, according to the public prosecutor’s office in the small town of Itzehoe, northwest of Hamburg.

“It’s not nuts. As secretary, she would likely have seen documents indicating that Jews were being killed in the camp. She’s an accessory to atrocities and needs to pay.”

No more an accessory than the camp commandant’s cook.

The camp commandant’s cook probably wasn’t typing reports detailing how many people were liquidated that month...

All things considered I'd say that, basically, the younger a German was...and the lower the rank that he/she had...the less serious their crimes should be considered.

An 18 year old private,or secretary, would have gone through almost 10 years of "Hitler Youth" brainwashing. And yes, there was a female equivalent of the Hitler Youth...can't recall its name.

A 40 year old colonel,or a 50 year old general,should have known better. An 18 year old kid...maybe not.

I don’t like that idea of dragging a 90 plus year old man or woman into the courtroom like that. There should be other ways to deal with it.
Even house arrest sounds better.
They are not a danger at this point.

So she saw documents. What was she supposed to do, call a cop? What should she have done in that position exactly??

“As secretary, she would likely have seen documents indicating that Jews were being killed in the camp. She’s an accessory to atrocities and needs to pay.”

I must disagree. The standard you imply suggests anyone with knowledge of a Jew being murdered should pay. As someone else on this thread mentioned, Hiter’s personal secretary was never charged, she certainly knew what was going on.

Those with knowledge of mass murder that never had any level of physical participation in it could be in the thousands that are still alive. You expect the child of a concentration camp that had knowledge of dad’s activities to be rounded up and tried? Or take the lady in question, just what was she supposed to do as a kid secretary, shoot her boss, turn him in to the Gestapo?

If you have read about any of these war criminal indictments, you know that the prosecutors generally consider the level of knowledge the defendant had regarding atrocities. This girl claims that, despite the fact that she was typing reports and letter detailing them, that she couldn’t see the crimes because her window faced the other direction. That argument doesn’t hold water.

If knowledge of a single murder makes one an accessory, why do you think that knowledge of ten thousand murders doesn’t?

10s of millions of soviet citizens murdered by Stalin. 10s of millions of Chinese citizens murdered by Mao.

Never hear about these, though.

You really think that Khrushchev and Deng Xiaoping would have tried their predecessors for war crimes? You can’t be serious.

I am reminded of this film...Kate Winslet played a former Nazi guard who was tried for war crimes...

The guy, who played Hitler in DOWNFALL, is cast as a professor in this film...

Traudel Junge was a true believer. She was in the bunker until the end and witnessed the marriage of Hitler to Eva Braun. One of the last things Braun did was ask Junge to speak to her friends and relatives if she managed to get home.

Junge appeared in several documentaries about WW2 in her later years, recounting the experiences as the secretary of Adolf Hitler.

Yes, she was featured prominently in "The World at War".

Pay for what? What other alternative did she have?

Maybe we should conduct the same decades long investigation into war crimes that may have been committed in Vietnam by US soldiers..........

Would you be OK with that? You can start with Lt. Calley for your first condemnation of war crimes..........Sheesh!

Too bad we didn’t apply this type of justice to the Japanese. They were vicious and sadistic as hell.

This old lady is being investigated by German prosecutors...Not British or American prosecutors...

Japan and Germany did not deal with World War 2 in the same way...Germans did try to prosecute Germans who committed war crimes for Nazis...Japan? I never heard of Japanese prosecutors going after Japanese who committed war crimes during World War 2...US prosecutors went after Japanese war criminals...

Hitler lived on after the war, our CIA surely knew. Mengele worked in the US after the war under an assumed name. It is a valuable man who has the morals of Fauci or Gates. He was a good Doctor for the CIA. The men who rained terror from the skies via buzz bombs, missiles etc, moved to the US and became heroes building rockets here.

Yet a secretary goes in from of Just Us.
