Dogs Came To North America With Earliest Humans: Study
ibt ^ | 2-24-2021 | Patrick Galey

Scientists said Wednesday they had discovered the oldest remains of a domestic dog in the Americas dating back more than 10,000 years, suggesting the animals accompanied the first waves of human settlers.

Humans are thought to have migrated to North America from Siberia over what is today the Bering Strait at the end of the last Ice Age -- between 30,000 and 11,000 years ago.

A new study led by the University at Buffalo analysed the mitochondrial DNA of a bone fragment found in Southeast Alaska.

The team initially thought the fragment belonged to a bear.

But closer examination revealed it to be part of a femur of a dog that lived in the region around 10,150 years ago, and that shared a genetic lineage with American dogs that lived before the arrival of European breeds.

"Because dogs are a proxy for human occupation, our data help provide not only a timing but also a location for the entry of dogs and people into the Americas," said Charlotte Lindqvist, an evolutionary biologist from the University at Buffalo and the University of South Dakota.

She said the findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, supports the theory that humans arrived in North America from Siberia.

"Southeast Alaska might have served as an ice-free stopping point of sorts, and now -- with our dog -- we think that early human migration through the region might be much more important than some previously suspected.

The history of dogs has been intertwined with man since ancient times and studying canine DNA can provide a good timeline for human settlement

A carbon isotope analysis of the bone fragment showed that the ancient Southeast Alaskan dog likely had a marine diet that consisted of fish and seal and whale scraps.

I suppose the bone had teeth marks on it and domestic back then meant “lunch”.

No different today. Humans support civilization. The dogs have gone into politics and education.

Not surprising. Dogs are good people. They can keep you warm and encouraged, they will protect you to the uttermost of their abilities, and they smell trouble coming.
As for the dog’s take on it, you need only rattle your keys and he lets you know “I’m in!” whether it’s to the market or the other hemisphere.
Like the man said — God made a dog!

“ Humans are thought to have migrated to North America from Siberia over what is today the Bering Strait at the end of the last Ice Age”

The migration over the Bering Strait almost certainly happened and is the theory preferred by “First peoples” to support their claim to be the original settlers of North America. Another theory of migration that occurred thousands of years before the Bering Strait move is the Solutrean Theory. People from Europe may have came across the Northern Atlantic by way of Iceland and Greenland, even camping on the shelf of sea ice along the way. Some evidence to support this has been found as far South as the Florida coast. Northwest Native Americans don’t like this theory because it makes them the second group to populate America.

Not native is correct. NA dogs are one of 5 ancestry lineages of domestic dogs with origins in the Pleistocene.

“The diversification of at least five dog ancestry lineages by the onset of the Holocene was followed by a dynamic population history that in many ways tracked that of humans, likely reflecting how dogs migrated alongside human groups.”https://eeb.tamu.edu/files/2020/10/origins_genetics_dogs.pdf

But the Indians they followed are still indigenous.

There really isn’t any evidence for the Solutrean idea. The idea comes from an archeologists comparison of lithics and his claiming a similarity. The DNA evidence says no.

Which fails to explain the sites dated to 130,000 years in CA and the sites found in S.Am dated to over 300,000 years.

“It had to be somebody who would remain patient and loyal even through loneliness. Somebody to care, cuddle, snuggle and nuzzle, and cheer and charm and snore and slobber and eat the trash and chase the squirrels. Somebody who would bring a family together with selflessness of an open heart. Somebody who would bark, and then pant, and then reply with the rapid wag of tail when their best friend says let’s go for a ride in the car.

So God made a Dog.”

"Cynosure" means "center of attention." It's from the Greek kynosoura which means "dog's tail." When a dog wags his/her tail, it is the center of attention.

H’mmm, Since God made dogs before he made the first man and the first woman, I guess He though the dogs need man instead of vice-versa.

Before a religious debate begins on my statement: To quote the immortal Sergeant Hulka: “Lighten up, Francis,” I’m only joking.
