Three Colorado cops involved in the brutal arrest of a 73-year-old woman with dementia — and later seen laughing and joking about the incident — have resigned, police said Friday.
Loveland Officers Austin Hopp and Daria Jalali and Community Services Officer Tyler Blackett stepped down over the June 2020 arrest of Karen Garner, Police Chief Robert Ticer said during a news conference.
Austin Hopp, Daria Jalali and Tyler Blackett all stepped down because of the 2020 incident. “Our goal at the Loveland Police Department has always been to make our community proud. We failed and we are very sorry for that,” Ticer said.
Body camera footage allegedly showed Hopp forcing the 80-pound woman to the ground and Jalali slamming her against a police car, after she walked out of a Walmart without paying for about $14 worth of items. Blackett helped transport Garner to the station.
A lawyer for Karen Garner said Police Chief Robert Ticer should leave his post as well.
The lawyer who represents Garner and her family said the department has a toxic culture — and that Ticer should have turned in his badge as well.
Karen Garner suffered multiple injuries, including a broken elbow.
“It’s this attitude of arrogance and entitlement, and frivolity taken in the use of force on its citizens and complete disregard for the people they’re policing,” Sarah Schielke said.

And now they’ll go beat up dementia patients for some other department.
hard to tell a dementia patient from a coked up homeless lady. one is harmless. the other, potentially, is not.
where were this lady’s care givers?
They should be in jail.
Did you missed the point that they relished what they did, joked about it, and clearly had the mindset that they probably would commit the same crime’s again without hesitation. They should be charged, convicted, and jail.
They didn’t need to break her elbow or laugh about it.
I wondered the same thing. Perhaps she outlived all her close relatives and was living alone. However, family members sued on her behalf.
Barf
“They should be charged, convicted, and jail.”
Yep. They’re depraved. Like I said here about this the other day, I wouldn’t want these guys sweeping my floor or pumping my gas.
Good... But yep that is what they do. Go to another location and start up the same business all over again. We had one in Az that was fired from Boston Mass and came to a small town in Az. Boy did he get an education quick... lol
Gone from this one too. This protection and invisible force field they think they have needs to go. And anyone who thinks they are all upstanding is an idiot. I drink with officers and I’ll tell you what... They are twisted as fact.
Not their fault, they have been conditioned and brainwashed to ignore the constitution, and even basic human rights. Many are military veterans and trained to kill the enemy. Problem is WE should never be considered as the enemy.
But we are all day long, every shift, every year, for years on end. This is from the son and nephew of LE. Even they are disgusted with what it has now become.
“hard to tell a dementia patient from a coked up homeless lady. one is harmless. the other, potentially, is not.”
Really? And you’re ok with them not getting her medical care for hours after they dislocated her shoulder? Do you think that would be OK to do to a coke addict? Let me assure you, it is NOT OK.
Dementia patients can wonder off quite easily, rather like three year olds. Sometimes family does not realize how bad the dementia is.
From my perspective a drug up homeless person generally looks homeless. This elderly woman, her clothing, lack of personal possessions, she appeared clean etc, just didn't appear like a typical homeless type. I've been around homeless drug and mental cases, with whites, their skin is often so filthy it appears dark brown. In addition to the fact she repeatedly said, "I'm going home" and it seems that's where she was going. She just didn't fit the mold of a drugged out homeless person from my perspective.
Looking for their mother? My mother had dementia and she would just take off. Nursing homes have the same problem to. The LEO’s were out of line.
Nice attempt to divert, but this scumbag will end up going to prison. Quoting Officer Austin Hopp =>
“Did you hear the pop?” Hopp asks Jalali, then describing the scene. “I was pushing, pushing, pushing. I hear ‘pop.’ I was like, ‘Oh no. That’s going to turn into something.’
“Many are military veterans and trained to kill the enemy.”
Hey! Open *your* fricking mind. I was in the military for 25 years, and that doesn’t mean I can’t tell the difference between an NVA soldier and a little old lady.
As Kipling wrote,
“Yes, makin’ mock o’ uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap;
An’ hustlin’ drunken soldiers when they’re goin’ large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin’ in full kit.
Then it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, ’ow’s yer soul?”
But it’s “Thin red line of ’eroes” when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it’s “Thin red line of ’eroes” when the drums begin to roll.”
Any American vet who’s ever been in Tommy’s place can come over to my house for a beer and a sandwich any time. Race be damned, if that’s what the leftwads are thinking.
why stop there? execute them. defund the police. I mean, if you’re going to overreact, you need to go for the gold.
if nothing else, it proves that poor policing is color blind and gender equal.
the family wasn’t there to keep her from danger, but they were available for the consultation with the attorney.
check.
June 20th? Why not quit then?
